Narcissistic Personality Disorder as Seen in James Thurber's The Secret Life of Walter Mitty

Intisari Skripsi ini meneliti tokoh utama dari cerita pendek James Thurber yang berjudul The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menganalisis apakah benar tokoh utama dari cerita tersebut merupakan penderita penyakit narsis. Teori yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah teori penyakit narsis yang dikemukakan oleh American Psychiatric Association dalam buku Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders Fifth Edition (DSM-5). Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa si tokoh utama cerita merupakan penderita penyakit narsis karena dia menunjukkan sembilan ciri diagnosis yang disebutkan oleh American Psychiatric Association dalam Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders Fifth Edition (DSM-5), yaitu melebih-lebihkan kemampuannya; sering disibukkan dengan khayalan tentang kesuksesan, kekuasaan, dan kepandaian yang tak terbatas; percaya bahwa dirinya spesial dan unik dan harus berhubungan dengan orang atau institusi lain yang juga spesial atau memiliki status yang tinggi; selalu berharap untuk dikagumi; memiliki keinginan untuk selalu dilayani; memanfaatkan hubungan yang dimilikinya dengan orang lain untuk tujuannya sendiri; kurang memiliki empati; sering merasa iri dengan orang lain; menunjukkan perilaku yang arogan.

Abstract This undergraduate thesis examines the main character of James Thurber's The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. The objective of this research is to investigate whether the main character of the story is an individual with narcissistic personality disorder. The theory employed in this research is the theory of narcissistic personality disorder proposed by the American Psychiatric Association in Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders Fifth Edition (DSM-5). The result of the investigation shows that Walter Mitty is an individual with narcissistic personality disorder since he shows nine diagnostic criteria suggested by the American Psychiatric Association in DSM-5, such as having a grandiose sense of self-importance; is preoccupied with fantasies of unlimited success, power, and brilliance; believing that he is special and unique and should associate with other special or high status people or institutions; requiring excessive admiration; having a sense of entitlement; is interpersonally exploitative; lacking empathy; is often envious of others; showing arrogant behaviors.
