Death as the Basis of the Plot in Poe's The Fall of the House of Usher and Premature Burial

Penelitian ini membahas tentang peran kematian dalam perkembangan plot di cerita pendek Premature Burial dan The Fall of the House of Usher karya Edgar Allan Poe. Kedua karya tersebut menceritakan tentang masalah-masalah yang muncul justru setelah tokoh-tokoh dalam cerita dianggap sudah meninggal. Skripsi ini menggunakan pendekatan objektif milik Abrams karena analisis diperoleh dari lima unsur intrinsik, yaitu alur, tema, seting, sudut pandang, dan karakter. Selain itu, studi pustaka juga dilakukan untuk memperkuat analisis. Kesimpulan dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa alur dalam kedua cerita tersebut dibangun dari kematian. Setiap kematian atau kondisi yang membuat seorang tokoh seperti sudah meninggal secara bertahap mengembangkan alur cerita ke tahap yang lebih kompleks.

This graduating paper aims to analyze the role of death on the development of plot in Poe's The Fall of the House of Usher and Premature Burial. The two stories tell about the problems that emerge after the characters are presumed dead. This graduating paper applies Abrams' objective approach because the analysis is based on the five intrinsic elements; plot, character and characterization, theme, setting, and point of view. Library research was performed to support the discussion. The conclusion of the study shows that Poe's The Fall of the House of Usher and Premature Burial utilize death as the basis of the plot. Each death or death-like condition gradually develops the plot.
