RASISME DALAM ALL GOD'S CHILLUN GOT WINGS KARYA EUGENE O'NEILL DALAM PERSPEKTIF STRUKTURASI GIDDENS

Penelitian dengan judul Rasisme dalam All Godâ's Chillun Got Wings karya Eugene O'Neill dalam Perspektif Strukturasi Giddens ini merupakan sebuah penelitian yang memiliki dua tujuan, yaitu untuk mengungkapkan bagaimana peran dualitas struktur O'Neill sebagai pengarang terhadap rasisme di masyarakat dan bagaimana tindakan-tindakan tokoh dalam karya O'Neill menggambarkan rasisme yang terjadi di masyarakat. Untuk mengungkap kedua tujuan tersebut digunakan teori Strukturasi Giddens. Dalam teori Strukturasi, konsep yang paling utama adalah dualitas struktur, dimana agen dan struktur saling mempengaruhi dan mempunyai kedudukan yang sama pentingnya. Agen memiliki kuasa untuk mengubah struktur melalui tindakannya, demikian pula pada saat yang sama agen tersebut bertindak sesuai dengan struktur yang membentuknya. Tindakan yang dilakukan agen dipengaruhi oleh tiga tingkat kesadaran, yaitu kesadaran diskursif yang diasosiasikan dengan tujuan tindakan, kesadaran praktis yang diasosiasikan dengan alasan atau landasan tindakan, serta tak berkesadaran yang diasosiasikan dengan motif tindakan. Ketiga strata kesadaran tersebut dibentuk oleh struktur masing-masing agen. Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan menganalisis makna tindakan-tindakan yang dilakukan oleh agen. Untuk itu, unit analisis yang berkaitan dengan agen (pengarang) diambil dari data sosial yang diperoleh dari literatur yang berhubungan dengan masyarakat Amerika di akhir abad 19 dan awal abad 20, sedangkan unit analisis yang berkaitan dengan agen (tokoh) diambil dari karya sastra. Setelah data dikelompokkan dalam kategori tertentu, maka dilakukan interpretasi terhadap masing-masing data dengan menggunakan kerangka teori yang ada. Penelitian ini menyimpulkan bahwa O'Neill melakukan tindakan komunikatif dengan menggunakan perbedaan ras sebagai latar dalam dramanya. Dengan kesadaran diskursifnya, O'Neill menyatakan bahwa tujuannya adalah untuk menunjukkan tragedi yang dialami oleh para tokoh. Tindakan ini memicu reaksi masyarakat pada masanya yang menganggap bahwa interaksi antar ras merupakan sesuatu yang tabu. All God's Chillun Got Wings menunjukkan pada masyarakat apa yang terjadi dalam masyarakat yang disegregasi. Anak-anak yang awalnya tidak mempunyai prasangka ras, seiring dengan berjalannya waktu, melakukan reproduksi sosial sehingga struktur rasis tumbuh dalam diri mereka. Struktur ini yang mempengaruhi tindakan-tindakan mereka di masa depan. Anak-anak dari kelompok kulit putih tumbuh dengan struktur supremasi kulit putih, sedangkan anak-anak kulit hitam tumbuh dengan inferioritas kulit hitam. Dengan struktur tersebut, mereka melakukan tindakan-tindakan untuk mendapatkan posisi di masyarakat, termasuk dengan memperjuangkan kehormatan ras mereka.

The research, entitled Racism in Eugene O'Neillâ's All God's Chillun Got Wings in Giddens' Structuration Perspective, has two aims. The first is to find out how Eugene O'Neill's duality of structure as an author to racism in the society is. The second is how the actions of the actors in O'Neill's work depict the racism in the society. Therefore, Giddens' theory of Structuration is used to answer the questions. In the theory of Structuration, the main concept is the duality of structure, where the agent and the structure both have the same important rule. The agent has its power to change the structure, while at the same time he does his actions according to the structure which shape him. The agent's action is influenced by the three levels of consciousness. The first consciousness is discursive consciousness which is associated with the aim of the action. The second is practical consciousness which is associated with the reason or the background of the action. The last consciousness is the unconscious, which is associated with the motif of the action. The three levels of consciousness is built from the structure of each agent. This research is held by analysing the meaning of the actions done by the agents. Therefore, the analysis data related to the agent (author) is taken from the literature corcerning the American society in late 19th century and early 20th century. The data related to the agent (actors) is taken from the drama. After being classified, the data then being interpreted using the theory provided. The conclussion of the research is that O'Neill is doing a communicative action by using the racial difference as the background of his drama. With his dicursive consciousness, O'Neill said that his goal is to show the tragedy experience by the actors. This action triggered the reaction of the society at his time. The society thinks that the interracial interaction is unappropriate. All God's Chillun Got Wings shows what happens in the segregated community. Children who don't have racial prejudice will have to do the social reproduction which cause the racial structure inside them. This structure will affect their actions in the future. The children which belongs to the white will grow up with the white supremacy, while the children of the blacks will grow up with the black inferiority. With that structure, they do some actions to get a position in the society, for example is by fighting for their racial dignity.
