Tesis ini mengkaji fenomena kebahasaan pada konstruksi verba berpartikel off dalam Bahasa Inggris. Tesis ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan (1) konstruksi gramatikal verba berpartikel off; (2) klasifikasi semantis verba berpartikel off; dan (3) fungsi verba berpartikel off. Data diperoleh dari kamus dan korpus. Kamus memberikan data yang sistematis dan korpus memberikan variasi data yang lebih banyak. Penelitian ini dikaji dengan metode penelitian deskriptif kualitatif. Pelaksaan metode ini melalui sejumlah tahapan: pengumpulan data, penganalisisan data, dan penyajian hasil analisis data. Tahapan analisis data dilakukan menggunakan metode agih dan padan dengan sejumlah tekniknya. Penelitian ini menemukan bahwa konstruksi verba berpartikel dapat dibedakan dengan konstruksi verba berpreposisi dengan beberapa alternasi konstruksi, yaitu (1) frasa nomina objek dari verba frasal dapat berada di antara verba dan partikel maupun setelah partikel; (2) mengkoordinatkan objek frasa nomina dengan verba frasal; dan (3) menempatkan frase nomina objek dari verba frasal di awal kalimat dapat terterima jika tanpa partikel karena hal ini mengindikasikan frase nomina merupakan suatu unit, tetapi memindahkan frasa nomina objek dengan partikel tidak terterima karena verba dan partikel merupakan satu unit sehingga tidak dapat dipisahkan. Dari hasil analisis ini ditemukan sekurang-kurangnya 80 konstruksi verba berpartikel off. Ditemukan pula fungsi semantis verba frasal yang mencakup verba berpartikel off intransitif, transitif, dan dwitransitif. Peran argumen dari verba berpartikel off dapat bertindak sebagai pelaku, penderita maupun pelaku potensial. Klasifikasi semantis verba berpartikel off terdiri dari dua klasifikasi, yaitu verba berpartikel off aspektual dan non-aspektual. Klasifikasi verba berpartikel off aspektual terbagi menjadi dua: inseptif dan kompletif. Fungsi yang dimiliki oleh verba berpartikel off terdiri dari fungsi aspektual, fungsi informal, dan fungsi ekspresi.

This thesis investigates language phenomenon of verb-particle construction with particle off in English. This thesis attempts to describe (1) grammatical construction of verb-particle off; (2) semantic classification of verb-particle off; and (3) function of verb-particle off. The data are gathered from the dictionary and corpus. The dictionary provides systematic data and the corpus gives more variants of the data. This research was conducted by descriptive-qualitative research method. The implementation of this method was through a number of stage: data gathering, analyzing data, and presenting the result of the data analysis. The stage of analyzing the data was performed by using distributional and identification method with a number of techniques. This study found that verb-particle construction can be distinguished from verb-preposition construction by implementing some of construction alternations, which are (1) noun phrase as object can be put in between the verb and the particle or after the particle; (2) coordinate noun phrase as object with the phrasal verb; (3) moving noun phrase to the left by itself is acceptable if without particle, that this indicate the noun phrase is a unit, but moving the particle and the noun phrase is not acceptable, since they do not form a phrase. From the data analyzing, this research found at least 80 verb-particle constructions with off. The argument structure of verb-particle with off consists of intransitive, transitive, and ditransitive. The semantic role of argument of verb-particle off can take action as agent, patient, and potential agent. Semantic classification of verb-particle off consists of two classifications that are aspectual and non-aspectual. The aspectual classification is derived into two kinds that are inceptive and completive. The functions found in verb-particle off construction are aspectual function, informal function and expression function.
