INTISARI Skripsi ini menganalisis novel karya Charles Dickens yang berjudul David Copperfield. Novel ini menampilkan topik tentang seorang anak yang bernama David Copperfield yang mendapatkan tekanan dari ayah tirinya . Dia harus memperjuangkan hidupnya agar kehidupan di masa depan menjadi lebih baik. Tekanan dari ayah tirinya berkaitan dengan kondisi sosial selama Revolusi Industri. Tujuan skripsi ini adalah untuk mengetahui tekanan yang di lakukan Pak Murdstone kepada David selama era Revolusi Industri dan untuk memperlihatkan perjuangan David selama hidupnya. Skripsi ini menggunakan pendekatan sosial-sejarah, pendekatan tersebut adalah pendekatan yang paling cocok digunakan untuk menganalisis hubungan antara karya sastra dengan lingkungan dan sejarah ketika karya itu dibuat. Pendekatan ini digunakan untuk mengungkap perjuangan David dan tekanan dari Pak Murdstone yang berkaitan dengan Revolusi Industri. Penelitian kapustakaan digunakan sebagai sebuah metode untuk mendukung analisis ini. Hasil dari analisis ini menunjukkan bahwa ada beberapa tekanan yang di lakukan oleh ayah tirinya. Ada hubungan antara tekanan-tekanan dari sang ayah tiri kepada David dan keadaan saat Revolusi Industri. Ada delapan bentuk perjuangan yang dilakukan oleh David yang muncul di dalam novel. Kesimpulannya, melalui sebuah cerita Charles Dickens menggambarkan kesulitan hidup dan tekanan selama Revolusi Industri, terutama di kehidupan David Copperfield.

ABSTRACT This undergraduate thesis analyzes Charles Dickens' David Copperfield. The novel presents topic about a child, David Copperfield who experiences oppression done by stepfather. He must struggle his life for a better life in the future. The oppression from his stepfather is related to social condition during the Industrial Revolution. The objectives of this research are to study the oppression of Mr. Murdstone to David during Industrial Revolution era and to reveal David's struggle in his life. This undergraduate thesis applies socio-historical approach since it is the most suitable to be used to analyze the relation between a literary work with the society and history when the work is produced. This approach is to find out David's struggle and Mr. Murdstone's oppression that is related to Industrial Revolution. Library research is conducted as a method to carry out the analysis. The result of the analysis shows that there are some oppression which are done by his stepfather. There are relations between the oppression from his stepfather to David and the condition of Industrial Revolution. There are eight different kind of struggles done by David that can be seen in the novel. Charles Dickens reflects the hard life and the oppression during the Industrial Revolution throughout the story, especially in David Copperfield's life.
