UNDOING GENDER DALAM NOVEL GOLDEN BOY KARYA ABIGAIL TARTTELIN

Penelitin ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui interseks yang melakukan undoing terhadap struktur gender yang biner. Bagi Judith Butler, seks dan gender adalah sama-sama wacana karena terbentuk secara kultural dan direproduksi berulang-ulang. Wacana tersebut bersifat tidak stabil, sehingga gender tidak stabil. Permasalahannya adalah hadirnya tokoh interseks yang tampak mempertegas gender yang tidak stabil menjadi indikasi bahwa interseks melakukan undoing gender yang biner, sehingga pertanyaannya mengerucut pada (1) bagaimana struktur gender yang biner membelenggu interseks dan (2) bagaimana interseks melakukan undoing gender yang biner. Untuk mengetahui bagaimana interseks melakukan undoing gender yang biner, peneliti menggunakan konsep performatifitas. Performatifitas adalah tindakan yang dilakukan secara berulang-ulang dan tidak stabil. Kemudian, metode yang digunakan adalah metode analisis tekstual pada novel untuk menemukan struktur gender yang biner membelenggu interseks. Kemudian, gender yang biner tersebut di-undoing melalui performatifitas interseks. Berdasarkan analisis yang dilakukan, struktur gender yang biner membelenggu interseks melalui wacana gender yaitu maskulin dan feminin. Gender maskulin dan feminin di-undoing oleh Max dengan tetap mempertahankan interseksnya dengan tidak memilih untuk ditunggalkan seksnya menjadi laki-laki yang maskulin atau perempuan yang feminin melalui performatifitasnya yang tidak stabil. Interseks memberikan suatu penegasan bahwa gender tidak stabil. Dengan demikian, dapat dikatakan bahwa interseks melakukan undoing terhadap gender yang biner dan stabil. Kemudian kesimpulannya adalah Max mengaburkan gender yang biner dengan mempertahankan interseks yang ada pada tubuhnya, tetapi masih tidak dapat keluar dari wacana gender yang biner. Ketidakmampuan untuk keluar dari wacana gender dikarenakan wacana mendahului subjek, sehingga apapun yang dilakukan subjek merupakan sebuah konstruksi dari wacana yang sudah ada sebelumnya.

This research is conducted to reveal intersex that undoes the binary structure of gender in Tarttelin's Golden Boy (2014). According to Judith Butler, sex is gender. Sex/gender is culturally constructed and repeatedly reproduced, so that it is discourse. The discourse is unstable. The presence of intersex of the character apparently reinforces the unstable gender and becomes an indication that it undoes the binary structure of gender. Accordingly, the question converging on (1) how does the binary structure of gender shackle intersex, and (2) how does intersex undo the binary of gender. To find out how intersex undoes the binary of gender, this research uses performativity. Performativity is unstable and repeatedly actions. Textual analysis method is used to find the handcuff of the binary structure of gender. Then, the binary of gender is undone by performativity of the intersex. Based on the analysis, the binary structure of gender shackles intersex by masculine and feminine discourse. Max undoes the discourse by retaining his intersex and does not choose his sex to be assigned into single sex and suitable gender: male and masculine or female and feminine. Thus, performativity of the intersex undoes the binary of gender. Intersex reinforces that gender is unstable. Hence, it can be said that intersex undoes the binary and stability of gender. In conclusion, Max undoes the binary of gender by retaining his intersex on his body, but he is still committed to gender discourse. It is because there is no subject precedes discourse, so that everything the subject does, is construction from the discourse that pre-exists the subject.
