THE TRANSLATION STRATEGIES OF CULTURAL TERMS FOUND IN THE NOVEL THE LORD OF THE RING; SEMBILAN PEMBAWA CINCIN

Skripsi ini meneliti strategi penerjemahan yang digunakan untuk menerjemahkan istilah budaya dalam novel The Lord of the Rings; The Fellowship of the Ring ke dalam bahasa Indonesia. Data diambil dari novel asli The Lord of the Rings; The Fellowship of the Ring dan novel versi Indonesia, The Lord of The Rings; Sembilan Pembawa Cincin. Hasil identifikasi menunjukkan 201 istilah budaya ditemukan dalam novel, yang kemudian diklasifikasikan dalam 4 jenis istilah budaya berdasarkan kategorisasi oleh Ke Ping. Klasifikasi data menunjukkan 99 istilah (49,3%) termasuk dalam kategori sistem tekno-ekonomi, 85 istilah (42,3%) dalam sistem sosial, 15 istilah (7,5%) dalam sistem ideasional, dan 2 istilah (1%) termasuk dalam katogori sistem linguistik. Istilah budaya kategori sistem tekno-ekonomi merupakan istilah yang paling sering ditemukan di dalam novel dibandingkan istilah lainnya. Setelah proses kategorisasi, istilah-istilah budaya ini dianalisis berdasarkan strategi penerjemahan Vinay dan Darbenet. Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa 41 istilah (20,4%) diterjemahkan dengan menggunakan strategi meminjam, 141 istilah (70,1%) menggunakan penerjemahan literal, 1 istilah (0,5%) menggunakan ekuivalensi, dan 18 istilah (9%) menggunakan adaptasi. Penerjemahan literal merupakan strategi yang paling sering digunakan, di mana istilah budaya langsung diterjemahkan berdasarkan artinya dalam bahasa target.

This research investigates the translation strategies used to translate cultural terms in the novel Lord of the Rings; The Fellowship of the Ring into their meaning in Indonesian. The data were collected from the original novel The Lord of the Rings; The Fellowship of the Ring and its Indonesian version, The Lord of The Rings; Sembilan Pembawa Cincin. The result of identification shows that 201 cultural terms are found in the novel which are also classified into 4 types of cultural terms based on Ke Ping's categorization. The classification indicates that 99 terms (49.3%) belong to techno-economic system, 85 terms (42.3%) to social system, 15 terms (7.5%) to ideational system, and 2 terms (1%) to linguistic system. The cultural terms of techno-economic system category are the most frequently found of all. After the categorization procedure, the cultural terms were later analyzed based on Vinay and Darbenet's translation strategies. The analysis shows that 41 terms (20.4%) are translated using borrowing strategy, 141 terms (70.1%) using literal translation, 1 term (0.5%) using equivalence, and 18 terms (9%) using adaptation. Literal translation is the most frequently used strategy of all, in which the terms are directly translated to its meaning in the target language.
