Kebebasan dalam Film V For Vendetta Menurut Perspektif John Stuart Mill

Terinspirasi oleh novel grafis V For Vendetta karya Allan Moore, James McTeigue menggarap film dengan judul sama pada 2006. Berbeda dengan yang lain, film ini menginspirasi para penonton di berbagai negara untuk mengadaptasi gagasan dan meniru simbol-simbol di dalamnya. Berdasarkan pertimbangan dari pengaruhnya tersebut, film ini signifikan untuk diangkat sebagai objek penelitian. John Stuart Mill dipilih karena kegigihannya dalam memperjuangkan kebebasan seperti yang tersurat dalam buku On Liberty. Ada beberapa rumusan masalah yang perlu dijawab, antara lain: isi deskripsi film V For Vendetta, apa saja teori kebebasan yang ditawarkan John Stuart Mill, serta mengurai kebebasan dalam film menurut perspektif Mill. Penelitian ini dikaji dengan metode kualitatif. Metode kualitatif adalah teknik pengumpulan data lewat studi pustaka dan observasi yang bertujuan untuk menjelaskan fenomena sedalam-dalamnya. Metode penelitian yang berdasar studi pustaka ini, mengintegrasikan semua data dan fakta yang terjadi dalam proses penelitian, bertujuan untuk menemukan "filsafat tersembunyi" dalam film. Objek formal penelitian ini adalah teori kebebasan perspektif John Stuart Mill, teori tersebut dianggap paling tepat sebagai upaya menghadirkan tinjauan filosofis tentang Liberalisme dalam film V For Vendetta. Dewasa kini film tidak hanya dijadikan sekadar medium pelarian dari kepenatan hidup. V For Vendetta adalah buktinya, ketika film lain hanya mampu mengubah persepsi secara individu, film ini memberikan pengaruh terhadap gerakan sosial. Kehadiran berbagai aksi protes anti-pemerintahan dengan pemakaian topeng Guy Fawkes, menandai bahwa ideologi yang dibawa oleh tokoh V telah berhasil meresap ke dalam pikiran masyarakat. Film ini memperjuangkan ideologi tentang Liberalisme/kebebasan, hal sama dengan apa yang diperjuangankan Mill di masa lalu. Mill dengan tegas mengatakan bahwa manusia dianggap bebas jika memiliki 3 kategori, yakni kebebasan berpendapat, berkumpul, dan bekerja, hal yang tidak dimiliki oleh pemerintahan dalam film V For Vendetta. Film ini mengajarkan, segala bentuk intervensi pemerintah terhadap kebebasan justru membangkitkan kesadaran bagi rakyat untuk memberikan perlawanan.

Inspired by Alan Moore's graphic novel V For Vendetta, James McTeigue directed a film with the same title in 2006. What sets apart this film from other films is its ability to inspire wide range of audiences tp adopt and imitate the symbols delivered in the film. Based on this fact, this film is significant to be a research object. John Stuart Mill was chosen for his tenacity in promoting liberty as seen in the book On Liberty. There are several research questions that need answers: what is the content description of the film V For Vendetta; what are the theories of liberty proposed by John Stuart Mill; and how is the liberty in the film based on Mill's perspective. This research applies qualitative method. Qualitative method is a method of data collecting throuh library research and observasation with the purpose of thorough explanation on the phenomena. Research method through library research integrates all data and facts in the research process, whcih purpose is to find "hidden philosophy" in the film. The formal object for this research is Mill's theory of liberty, which is regarded to be the most appropriate in bringing a philosophical study on Liberalism in the film V For Vendetta. Film today is not only a media by the mean of entertainment. V For Vendetta is the evidence, when other films only able to change individual perspective, this film influences social movements. The birth of various anti-government protest movements with members wearing Guy Fawkes' mask, signal the immersion of ideology brought by the character V. This film highlights the ideology of Liberalism/liberty, the same ideology promoted by Mill in the past. Mill stated that man is regarded as a free man when he posseses three things: freedom of speech, freedom of organization, and freedom of work- three things that are absent from the government portrayed in V For Vendetta. This film taught us that all form of government's intervention against freedom, in contrary, results in citizens' awareness to fight for it.
