MOCHTAR NAIM DAN KEHIDUPAN INTELEKTUAL DI SUMATERA BARAT 1968-1988

Tesis ini mengkaji tokoh Intelektual Minangkabau kontemporer yaitu Mochtar Naim sebagai central permasalahan. Tesis ini menggunakan dua pendekatan yaitu pendekatan biografis dan pendekatan sejarah pemikiran. Kajian ini dilatar belakangi oleh hadirnya Mochtar Naim sebagai seorang Intelektual asal Minangkabau di saat langkanya kehadiran Intelektual Minangkabau mulai era Orde Baru jika dibandingkan dengan era sebelumnya. Fokus penelitian ini mengkaji latar belakang lingkungan sosial budaya yang mempengaruhi perkembangan Intelektual Mochtar Naim, perkembangan dan dinamika yang terjadi pada sikap Intelektual dan pemikiran-pemikiran Mochtar Naim serta dimana posisi Mochtar Naim dalam khasanah sejarah Intelektual Minangkabau Pascakemerdekaan. Tujuan penulisan kajian ini adalah menjelaskan proses perkembangan Intelektual Mochtar Naim, memperoleh gambaran tentang ide yang melatarbelakangi setiap kegiatan intelektual Mochtar Naim. Metode penelitian ini menggunakan metode sejarah kritis yang dilakukan melalui tahap heuristik, kritik sumber, analisa dan interpretasi, terakhir dilaporkan dalam bentuk uraian Tesis. Dari hasil temuan bahwa Mochtar Naim sebagai seorang Intelektual sangat dipengaruhi oleh kondisi sosial budaya dan pendidikan yang ia alami. Mulai dari kondisi sosial budaya Minangkabau yang ia alami pada masa kecil dan remaja hingga proses pendidikan yang ia alami di daerah rantau terutama proses menuntut ilmu di McGill University dan New York University. Kemudian corak perjuangan Intelektual Mochtar Naim yang sangat menonjol adalah penegakan nilai-nilai moral Keminangkabauan. Corak perjuangan ini sangat dipengaruhi oleh kondisi lingkungan tempat ia berdomisili yaitu Sumatera Barat. Sumatera Barat awal era Orde Baru identik dengan persoalan pemulihan harga diri setelah peristiwa PRRI. Dua hal yang paling signifikan dari Mochtar Naim bagi pertumbuhan budaya Minangkabau yaitu konsep dialektika kebudayaan nusantara dan suara perlawanannya ketika ‘Nagari’ di Sumatera Barat disamaratakan dengan sistem desa. Kemudian di Akhir Abad ke-20 Mochtar Naim juga fokus akan isu kebangkitan Umat Islam, hal yang penting dari Mochtar Naim akan persoalan ini adalah keteguhan argumennya yang mengatakan bahwa persoalan umat Islam di Indonesia adalah berkisar pada masalah Sinkretik Versus Sintetik.

This thesis examines the intellectual figures of contemporary Minangkabau is Mochtar Naim as a central issue. This thesis adopts two approaches, biographical approach and the history of thought. The study was motivated by the presence of Mochtar Naim as an intellectual Minangkabau origin in the current scarcity of intellectual presence Minangkabau start the New Order era when compared with the previous era. The focus of this study examines the background of social and cultural environment that affect intellectual development Mochtar Naim, development and dynamics of the attitudes and ideas intellectual Mochtar Naim as well as where Mochtar Naim in the repertoire of the intellectual history of postindependence Minangkabau. The purpose of writing this study is to explain the process of intellectual development Mochtar Naim, get a picture of the idea underlying all intellectual activity Mochtar Naim. This research method using critical historical methods conducted through heuristic stage, source criticism, analysis and interpretation, the last reported in the form of a thesis description. From the findings that Mochtar Naim as a intellectual greatly influenced by the socio-cultural and educational conditions his experienced. Starting from the social culture of Minangkabau his experienced in childhood and adolescence to the educational process in the seacoast area, specially study in McGill University and New York University. Then patterns Mochtar Naim intellectual struggle that really stood out was the enforcement of moral values ‘Keminangkabauan’. The style of this struggle is strongly influenced by environmental conditions where it is domiciled West Sumatra. West Sumatra early New Order era synonymous with the issue of recovery of self-esteem after the PRRI. The most of significants from Mochtar Naim to the growth of Minangkabau culture is the concept of cultural dialectic archipelago and noise resistance when the 'Nagari' in West Sumatra generalized to the village system. Then at the end of the 20th century Mochtar naim also focus on the issue of the rise of Muslims, the important thing of Mochtar naim will matter is constancy argument that says that the issue of Muslims in Indonesia are ranged on synthetic versus syncretic problem.
