Comparative Study on Popular Literature: A Reader-Response Critic on Stephenie Meyer apostrophe s Twilight and Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl apostrophe s Beautiful Creatures

Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui karakteristik yang diharapkan para pembaca dari sebuah karya gotik-romantis, dan untuk mengindentifikasi mengapa Twilight karya Stephenie Meyer lebih banyak dibaca dibandingkan dengan Beautiful Creatures karya Kami Gracia dan Margaret Stohl. Pembahasan dalam penelitian ini dibatasi pada analisis perbandingan elemen-elemen dalam Twilight dan Beautiful Creatures yang berhubungan dengan ketertarikan pembaca pada novel tersebut. Untuk menjawab tujuan dari penelitian ini, teori reader-response yang dikemukakan oleh Tompkins digunakan sebagai hal penting dalam pragmatic approach. Definisi dari gotik-romantis oleh Cawelti juga digunakan dalam penelitian ini sebagai acuan guna mengetahui karakteristik dan elemen kedua novel tersebut. Terdapat dua metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini. Pertama, untuk mengetahui struktur kedua novel tersebut digunakan metode studi pustaka. Kedua, metode diskusi kelompok terarah juga digunakan untuk memperoleh tanggapan dari para pembaca. Hasil dari penelitian ini menujukan bahwa para pembaca yang membaca novel gotik-romantis mengharapkan sesuatu yang berbeda dibandingkan dengan jenis aliran novel lainya, seperti karakter-karakter yang memiliki keindahan fisik, tempat yang indah dan unik, cerita cinta yang penuh pengorbanan dan hal-hal yang romantis. Secara umum, hasilnya menunjukkan bahwa para pembaca lebih tertarik untuk membaca Twilight daripada Beautiful Creatures dikarenakan Twilight berhasil menarik perhatian pembaca dan memenuhi harapan mereka terhadap sebuah novel gotik-romantis.

The objective of this comparative study are to find out the readers expectations about the characteristic of gothic romance work, and to identify the causes that make Twilight by Stephenie Meyer is more widely read than Beautiful Creatures by Kami Gracia and Margaret Stohl. The discussion of this graduating paper is limited on the analysis of the comparison of the elements in Twilight and Beautiful Creatures which are related to the readers interest when they read those novels. In order to reach the objective of the research, a reader response theory as the important tool in pragmatic approach proposed by Tompkins is applied in this research. The definition of gothic-romance proposed by Cawelti, which is used as the reference, is also used to study the characteristics and the elements of the novels. There are two types of method which are used in the research, first is library-type of research, which uses Twilight and Beautiful Creatures novels to examine the structures. The Second method is the focus group discussion which is used to gain responses from the readers. The results of the study show that when the readers read gothic romance novel, they look for something which is very different from other genres, such as the characters which possess the physical beauty, the places which considered as beautiful and extraordinary, and the love story that is full of sacrifices and romantic expressions. According to the whole finding, the readers adore Twilight more than Beautiful Creatures, because it succeeds in attracting the readers attention and is filling what they expect in gothic romance novel.
