KORELASI KEMAMPUAN BAHASA INGGRIS DENGAN PRESTASI AKADEMIK MAHASISWA PADA PROGRAM PASCASARJANA UNIVERSTAS GADJAH MADA

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui korelasi antara kemampuan Bahasa Inggris yang dilihat melalui skor TOEFL (Test of English as Foreign Language) dengan prestasi akademik mahasiswa yang diukur melalui nilai Indeks Prestasi Kumulatif/ IPK dan lama studi. Subyek penelitian adalah mahasiswa program pascasarjana UGM angkatan tahun 2008, 2009 dan 2010. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif dengan pendekatan kuantitatif. Dari analisis korelasi, didapat hasil bahwa terdapat hubungan positif dan signifikan antara nilai TOEFL dengan IPK mahasiswa baik pada angkatan 2008, 2009, 2010 maupun gabungan dari 2008 – 2010. Hal ini ditunjukkan dari nilai coreccted item correlation yang diperoleh pada tahun 2008 sebesar 0,781, pada tahun 2009 sebesar 0,608, pada tahun 2010 sebesar 0,655 dan pada tahun 2008 – 2010 sebesar 0,697 dengan nilai signifikansi sebesar 0,000 (p < 0,05). Sementara itu, analisis hubungan antara nilai TOEFL dengan lama masa studi menunjukkan bahwa terdapat hubungan negatif dan signifikan antara nilai TOEFL dengan lama masa studi mahasiswa baik pada angkatan 2008, 2009, 2010 maupun gabungan dari 2008 – 2010. Hal ini ditunjukkan dari nilai coreccted item correlation yang diperoleh pada tahun 2008 sebesar – 0,282, pada tahun 2009 sebesar – 0,198, pada tahun 2010 sebesar – 0,265 dan pada tahun 2008 – 2010 sebesar – 0,263 dengan nilai signifikansi sebesar 0,000 (p < 0,05). This research aims to comprehend the correlation between English language mastery marked by TOEFL score with students‟ academic performance as seen from Cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) and length of study. The subject in this research is limited to graduate students of 2008, 2009 and 2010 intake. The research is conducted using descriptive method with quantitative approach. The data used in this research is TOEFL score, GPA, and length of study. From the correlation analysis, it is revealed that there is a positive and significant correlation between TOEFL score and students‟ GPA, both for the intake 2008, 2009 and 2010. It is shown by the correlation value of 0,781 for 2008 intake; 0,608 for 2009 intake; and 0,655 for 2010 intake, and 0,697 for the period of 2008-2010 with significance of 0,000 (p < 0,05). Meanwhile, the analysis of TOEFL score and length of study shows a significant negative correlation, both for 2008, 2009 and 2010 intake. This is shown by the correlation value of – 0,282 for 2008 intake; – 0,198 for 2009 intake; and – 0,265 for 2010 intake. As for the period of 2008 – 2010 the correlation value is – 0,263 with significance of 0,000 (p < 0,05).
