HAUDENOSAUNEE INDIGENOUS KNOWLEDGE: A STUDY ON OREN LYONS ORATIONS TO UNITED NATIONS

Tesis ini membahas kearifan lokal Haudenosaunee dalam orasi Oren Lyons untuk PBB. Orasi-orasi yang diambil sebagai objek penelitian ini adalah orasi yang berjudul \\"Where is the Eagle Seat?\\" yang diorasikan pada tahun 1977, \\"Address to UN General Assembly\\" yang diorasikan pada tahun 1992, dan \\"The Ice is Melting in the North\\" yang diorasikan pada tahun 2000. Selain mengidentifikasi kearifan lokal Haudenosaunee, tema-tema yang berulang mengenai kearifan lokal juga diidentifikasi. Penelitian ini dilakukan dalam disiplin ilmu Pengkajian Amerika, khususnya dalam Studi penduduk asli Amerika. Dari sudut pandang Pengkajian Amerika, peneliti mengangkat isu tribal nationalism di mana budaya suku, produk, dan artefak dipelajari dari perspektif suku tersebut. Dalam menafsirkan transkrip orasi, peneliti menggunakan teori interpretasi Paul Ricoeur dari tradisi hermeneutik. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian pustaka. Dalam melakukan penelitian kepustakaan, peneliti mengumpulkan data dari jurnal, buku, artikel, dan situs web. Data utama dalam penelitian ini adalah tiga transkrip orasi Oren Lyons yang disebutkan di atas, sedangkan data lain yang terkait dengan budaya Haudenosaunee digunakan sebagai data pendukung. Studi ini menunjukkan bahwa ketiga orasi Oren Lyons sarat dengan kearifan lokal Haudenosaunee seperti keadilan dan kesetaraan, kemurahan hati, rasa hormat dan cinta untuk orang tua, dan cinta untuk anak-anak, kesetaraan antara semua ciptaan, keberlanjutan dan kepedulian terhadap generasi penerus, kekuatan Pencipta, hukum alam, spiritualitas, kekuatan spiritual, persatuan, perdamaian, harmoni, rekonsiliasi, kesehatan, rasa syukur, The Great Law of Peace, prinsip demokrasi, ramalan penduduk asli Amerika, penjaga tradisi, pertemuan tradisional, dan konsepsi Turtle Island dan Ibu Pertiwi. Tema-tema yang berulang dalam kearifan lokal ini adalah spiritualitas, hukum alam, perdamaian, persatuan, keadilan dan kesetaraan, kepedulian terhadap generasi penerus, dan konsepsi Turtle Island dan Ibu Pertiwi. Semua kearifan lokal Haudenosaunee ini digunakan oleh Oren Lyons untuk mendukung kelompok yang lemah seperti penduduk asli, orang kulit berwarna dan orang-orang miskin, selain itu juga untuk untuk mempromosikan gaya hidup yang lestari untuk mengatasi masalah lingkungan yang dihadapi dunia saat ini. This thesis discusses Haudenosaunee Indigenous knowledge in Oren Lyons orations to United Nations. The orations taken as the object of the study are “Where is the Eagle Seat?” Oration spoken in 1977, “Address to UN General Assembly” Oration spoken in 1992, and “The Ice is Melting in the North” Oration spoken in 2000. In addition to the identification of Haudenosaunee Indigenous knowledge in the three orations, the recurring themes of the Indigenous knowledge are also identified. This study is conducted in American Studies discipline, specifically in the area of Native American Studies. From American Studies point of view, the researcher elevates the issue of tribal nationalism in which tribal cultures, products, and artifacts were studied from the tribal perspective. In interpreting the oration transcripts, the researcher utilized Paul Ricoeur’s interpretation theory from the hermeneutic tradition. This study is a library research. Conducting a library research, the researcher gathered the data from journals, books, articles, and websites. The main data of the study are the three Oren Lyons oration transcripts. Whereas other data related to the speech and the Haudenosaunee culture are used as supporting data. The study shows that the three Oren Lyons orations are loaded with Haudenosaunee Indigenous knowledge such as justice and equality, generosity, respect and love for elders, and love for children, equality among all creations, sustainability and concern for future generation, the power of the Creator, natural law, spirituality, spiritual force, unity, peace, harmony, reconciliation, wishes of health, gratitude, The Great Law of Peace, democratic principle, Native American prophesies, keepers of tradition, traditional gathering, and the conception of Turtle Island and Mother Earth. The recurring themes are spirituality, natural law, peace, unity, justice and equality, concern for future generation, and the conception of Turtle Island and the Mother Earth. All of this Haudenosaunee Indigenous knowledge is used by Oren Lyons to advocate weaker group of people such as indigenous people, people of color and poor people, and to promote sustainable lifestyle to overcome environmental problems faced by the world today.
