Sejarah Sosial Kawasan Senen, 1950an - 1970an

Fokus penelitian ini adalah mengenai perkembangan wilayah Senen yang mengacu kepada tiga pokok permasalahan, yaitu mengenai keberagaman etnisitas, kriminalitas preman dan copet, dan juga prostitusi. Kawasan Senen dijadikan cakupan spasial karena kawasan ini merupakan kawasan pertama di Jakarta, setelah Indonesia merdeka, yang dijadikan tempat tujuan orang-orang untuk berurbanisasi secara masif dan mencari penghasilan. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode sejarah dan juga memanfaatkan sumber primer dan sekunder. Pemilihan periode tahun 1950an hingga 1970an karena pada periode tahun tersebut kawasan Senen mencapai puncak kejayaannya sebagai pusat pertumbuhan ekonomi dan juga sebagai pusat hiburan kota Jakarta. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukan bahwa pembangunan Proyek Senen merupakan daya tarik yang sangat kuat bagi para pendatang yang datang ke Jakarta untuk mencari penghasilan. Dengan adanya Proyek Senen juga ternyata menjadikan masalah-masalah sosial menjadi lebih kompleks, seperti keberagaman etnisitas, preman dan copet, dan juga prostitusi. Semua masalah tersebut sebenarnya sudah terjadi pada masa pemerintahan kolonial, tetapi permasalahan tersebut menjadi semakin rumit semenjak kehadiran Proyek Senen. Ironisnya, Proyek Senen yang dirancang dan dibangun sedemikian megah pada masanya dan menjadikan kawasan ini semakin berkembang, ternyata tidak mampu untuk mengubah kondisi sosial-ekonomi masyarakatnya. Masyarakat setempat tetap pada status ekonomi menengah ke bawah. Perkembangan dan kemajuan yang diciptakan oleh Proyek Senen hanya mampu mencapai permukaan masyarakatnya saja, tidak mampu menjangkau ke lapisan masyarakat yang lebih dalam dan mengubah keadaan sosial-ekonomi masyarakat tersebut.

The focus of this research is the development of the Senen neighborhood, and refers to three main issues, which are the diversity of ethnicity; crimes, gangsters and pickpockets; and as well as prostitution. Senen used as a spatial of this research because Senen is the first neighborhood in Jakarta, after the independence of Indonesia, used as a main destination for people to massively migrate and looking for money. This research uses a historical method and uses primary and secondary sources. The period between 1950's until 1970's uses as a main period of this research, because these periods reflects the peak condition of the Senen neighborhood as a center of the economic growth and as a center of entertainment in Jakarta. The results indicate that the development of Proyek Senen is the main appeal for migrants to come to Jakarta, or Senen in this case, to seek an income for living. The existence of Proyek Senen is more likely to complicating the social issues, even those social issues had already existed since colonial regime, those social issues are diversity of ethnicity, crimes gangsters and pickpockets, and prostitution. Ironically, Proyek Senen which designed and built as a big project from government in his time and hopefully can improve the neighborhood to grow, in fact can not change the condition of socio-economic of its people. The people of Senen remains at the middle to lower economic status. The development and progress made by the government only able to reach the surface of society itself, not be able to reach the deeper layers and change the socio-economic conditions of its people.
