THE ANTAGONISTIC NATURE OF THE UNITED STATES-IRAN RELATIONS: A CONSTRUCTIVIST PERSPECTIVE

Selama lebih dari tiga dekade hubungan Amerika Serikat dan Iran telah dikarakteristikkan dengan permusuhan, kecurigaan, dan ketidakpercayaan yang mendalam. Posisi mereka yang selalu bertentangan dalam berbagai isu dimana keduanya ikut terlibat menunjukkan bahwa sifat antagonis sungguh ada di dalam hubungan kedua negara tersebut. Lebih jauh lagi, penelitian ini akan membahas aspek dasar dari permasalahan ini dengan menggunakan perspektif konstruktivisme yang bertindak sebagai sebuah pendekatan yang berbasis norma. Tidak seperti pendekatan-pendekatan dengan basis material, konstruktivisme menekankan pada pentingnya ide dan identitas. Sejarah interaksi antara kedua negara tersebut tidak mendukung malah berkontribusi terhadap pembangunan makna intersubjective yang menghasilkan ide tentang musuh atau ancaman serta basis ideologi yang saling berseberangan satu sama lain. Lebih menarik lagi, konstruktivisme juga menyebutkan mengenai bagaimana identitas korporat dan sosial berperan penting dalam menentukan hubungan-hubungan antar negara sehingga penelitian ini akan memperlihatkan bagaimana identitas-identias tersebut memainkan peran yang signifikan dalam memastikan baik Amerika Serikat maupun Iran selalu mengambil kebijakan luar negeri yang bertentangan satu sama lain.

For more than three decades the relations between the U.S. and Iran have been characterized by hostility, suspicion, and deep mistrust. Their conflicting positions over several issues where both get involved show that there is, indeed, the antagonistic nature in the relations of both countries. Furthermore, this research would like to discuss the groundwork aspects of this issue by using constructivism which serves as a norm-based approach. Unlike those material-based approaches, constructivism emphasizes on the importance of ideas and identities. The history of interactions between those two countries could not help but to contribute the construction of the intersubjective meaning which generated the idea about enemy or threat and ideological basis which is opposing toward each other. More interestingly, constructivism also mentions about how corporate and social identities matter in determining the relations among countries so this research would like to show how those identities play significant roles in ensuring both the U.S. and Iran to always take foreign policies which are conflicting toward each other.
