Amanda Wingfield's Character Development seen in Tennessee Williams' The Glass Menagerie

Skripsi ini menganalisa karya Tennessee Williams, The Glass Menagerie. Objek analisa penelitian ini adalah karakter utama di dalam drama tersebut, yaitu Mrs. Amanda Wingfield. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menemukan karakteristik dari Amanda di dalam drama The Glass Menagerie dan perkembangan karakteristiknya dari awal hingga akhir cerita. Penelitian ini menggunakan teori objektif karena teori tersebut merupakan teori yang paling tepat untuk menganilsa karakteristik dari sebuah karakter di dalam drama. Hasil dari analisis menunjukkan bahwa karakter utama, Mrs. Amanda Wingfield, merupakan karakter dinamis. Sifat karakteristik yang dimilikinya di awal cerita berbeda dengan sifat karakteristik di akhir cerita. Karakteristik pada Amanda mengalami perubahan setelah dia menghadapi konflik di dalam cerita. Di awal cerita, Amanda adalah seseorang yang tidak mandiri, sedangkan di akhir cerita dia berubah menjadi seseorang yang mau bertanggung jawab untuk hidupnya sendiri. Dia juga menjadi seseorang yang tidak egois di akhir cerita. Dia menghargai pilihan hidup anak-anaknya yang berbeda dengan apa yang diinginkannya.

This graduating paper analyzes Tennessee Williams The Glass Menagerie. The analysis object of this research is the main character in the play, which is Mrs. Amanda Wingfield. The objective of this research is finding Amandas characteristics in The Glass Menagerie and her character development. This study uses objective theory, because it is the most suitable theory to analyze the characteristics of a character in the play. The result of the analysis shows that the main character, Mrs. Amanda Wingfield, is a dynamic character. Her characteristics in the beginning of the play are different from her characteristics at the end of the play. Her characteristics change after she faces conflict in the story. At the beginning of the story Amanda is kind of person who is dependent, and at the end of the story she changes into someone who is willing to be responsible for her own life. She also becomes someone who is not selfish in the end of the story. She appreciates her childrens desires of life which is different with hers.
