Searching for Identity: A Transnational Study of the Hippies in the 1960's and It's Aftermath

Ada begitu banyak penelitian tentang hippies namun masih sedikit yang membahas tentang disposisi dan identifikasi mereka kaitannya dengan tahun 1960-an dan sesudahnya. Teori Pierre Bourdieu mengenai praktik budaya, teori hibriditas dan globalisasi digukanan dalam penelitian ini untuk menyelidiki transnasionalitas dari para hippies untuk mencari identitas universal mereka. Penelitian ini menerapkan pendekatan Studi Amerika Transnasional untuk mendiskusikan isu-isu sebagai berikut: (1) disposisi sosial budaya dari hippies pada tahun 1960-an, (2) pengaruh pergerakan di Eropa terhadap hippies di Amerika, (3) hibriditas budaya dari kaum hippies yang berkaitan dengan India, dan (4) persamaan dari hippies di ketiga negara dan alasan dibaliknya. Penelitian ini menerapkan metode kajian pustaka dan analisis dokumen dalam mengumpulkan data dan menggunakan metode analisis deskriptif untuk menganalisis data. Tiga negara yang menjadi focus kajian dalam artikel ini adala Amerika Serikat, India dan Jerman dalam kaitannya dengan hippies pada tahun 1960-an. Temuan kajian menunjukkan adanya disposisi yang sama di antara para hippies di negara-negara yang dikaji, beberapa persamaan dan perbedaan dalam praktik budaya hippies di ketiga negara yang dikaji dan pergeseran ideology dan identifikasi hippies dalam perkembangannya. .

The study on the hippies is abundant in numbers but not many of them study the disposition and identification of the hippies during the 1960s and its aftermath. Pierre Bourdieu's theory on cultural practice, theory of hybridity, and globalization are used in this research to investigate the disposition and trans-nationality of the hippies in order to search for their universal identity. A Transnational American Studies approach is implemented to cover the following issue: (1) the socio-cultural disposition of the hippies in the 1960s, (2) the influence of European movement to the American Hippies, (3) the cultural hybridity of the hippies in relation with India, and (4) the similarities of the hippies and the reasons behind it. This research used library research and document analysis method in gathering the data whereas descriptive analysis approach is also used to analyze the data. The United States of America, India and Germany are the three countries being studied in relation of the hippies in the 1960s. The finding shows similar dispositions or background among the hippies in some countries being studied, some similarities and differences in the cultural practices of the hippies in the countries being studied which shows the transnationality of the hippie's identity and the influence of hybridity and globalization which causes the shifting of ideology and cultural practices of the hippies in its developments.
