bPenelitian ini merupakan sebagian penafsiran atas berita-berita TNI di Harian Kompas. Berita TNI di Kompas merupakan produk jurnalistik yang tunduk pada kaidah-kaidah jurnalisme universal dan terutama sangat dipengaruhi oleh kebijakan redaksional yang terkait dengan visi dan misi Kompas sebagai institusi pers yang independen. Realitas tentang TNI yqg ditampilkan Kompas adalah realitas yang sudah diseleksi - atau realitas tangm kedua (second hand reality). Melalui teknik dan strategi jurnalismenya, secara simbolik Kompas berupaya untuk mengontrol kesadaran khalayak tentang eksistensi dan kiprah TNI - individual maupun institusional - sehingga terbangun citra tertentu tentang TNI. .Ada dua kelompok besar tema dari berita-berita TNI - yakni kelompok tema yang memberi kesan citra positif dan kelompok tema yang memberi kesan citra negatif. FTemuan penting dari tesis ini adalah bahwa citra TNI secara umum belum begitu membaik pasca runtuhnya rezim Orde Baru yang selama t i p dekade didukungnya habis-habisan. Namun sejumlah upaya yang dilakukan untuk membangun kembali citra yang terpuruk itu cukup membawa has& akan tetapi tumbuhnya pun perlahan dan bisa saja runtuh kembali bilamana tak dirawat dan dijaga. Berkat pemberitaan media cetak berhaluan moderat dan bervisi hwnanis seperti Kompas, upaya TNI untuk merenovasi citranya itu sangatlah terbantu, Menerapkan jumalisme santun - ditengah-tengah maraknya jurnalisme seraph yang mewarnai eforia kebebasan pers - Kompas dengan tetap memegang teguh independensinya berusaha obyektif untuk memilah-milah, mana fakta dan realita yang harus “dilawan” dan mana pula yang harus “dibela”. Melalui berita-berita TNI tersebut juga dapat diketahui bagaimana jargon-jargon dan idiom-idiom khas TNI, isu dan kebijakan apa yang sedang dan telah mereka garap - dan kemudian bagaimana pula Kompas memaknai peristiwa / fakts tertentu tentang TNI untuk ditampilkan di hadapan khayalak dengan citra tertentu pula.

This study is intended to observe The Indonesian Arm Force’s news published in Kompas, daily newspaper which will form a certain image about Indonesian Arm Forces (TNI). In this case, learnt how Kompas as a moderate stemmed newspaper with its humanist vision - in the middle of press freedom atmosphere in its Reformation Age - follow to determine the arm force image which had been scorned caused by “political sins” for about three decades in the authority of New Order Regime. The analysis used to open the news text was discourse analysis from Teun A. van Dijk. The use language style, words, certain sentence by mass media has a tight correlation with the image which will be formed the newscast. The choice of using certain words, sentences, certain style were not seen as a way of practicing journalism, but must be seen as a political communication -- a way to interfere the public opinion, to create support, to get legitimacy and beat the opposition or enemies. Text structure is the effective way to see the news process product which done when someone - through media - send his message. Certain words (lexicon) is perhaps chosen by public official to stress the political attitude or opinion, socialized policy he declared, collect support, manipulate public opinion, form political awareness or legitimacy of the political authority. This study shows that TNI news in Kompas daily newspaper becomes humanist journalism product done by Kompas as an effort to direct public awareness so that the won’t be slipped by the freedom euphoria which is unlimited - without being lost with its independence or sacrifice critical attitude - in coordinating TNI which is in corrective formation to its internal reformation. Thematically, TNI news in Kompas daily newspaper is divided into two main group of theme. First, the newscast with a theme to develop positive image to TNI, and the second is the group of news with a theme to build negative image to TNI. Finally, humanist journalism followed by Kompas merely to be “balance” in its diversity of journalism ideology in Indonesia which tend to uncontrolled - and its good for our developing country which is learning to democratic itself
