The Social-Economic Condition of America in the Late Nineteenth Century and The Author's Life Experiences as Reflected in Edwin Arlington Robinson's Richard Cory

Ini merupakan analisis dari sebuah puisi berjudul Richard Cory ditulis oleh Edwin Arlington Robinson. Puisi itu sendiri mendapatkan hadiah Pulitzer dan menjadi terkenal setelah Robinson menerbitkannya ulang. tujuan dari skripsi ini adalah untuk mengkorelasikan puisi dengan kondisi masyarakat ketika puisi tersebut ditulis dan untuk menemukan apa yang penulis ingin korelasikan dengan pengalaman hidupnya. Disamping itu, teori yang digunakan dalam skripsi ini adalah pendekatan strukturalisme dinamis. Metode yang digunakan adalah berdasarkan penelitian pustaka. Puisi Richard Cory merupakan data primer. Kamus, artikel, dan buku juga digunakan sebagai data sekunder untuk mendukung analisis. Informasi tambahan juga diakses dari internet. Dapat disimpulkan bahwa puisi tersebut bercerita tentang cerminan dari keadaan masyarakat Gardiner, sebuah tempat dimana sang penulis banyak menghabiskan waktu hidupnya. Dari puisi tersebut juga, Robinson menceritakan tentang perbedaan kelas sosial di amerika pada akhir abad Sembilan belas, kelas social yang lebih rendah harus bertahan untuk tetap hidup, sedangkan kelas social yang lebih tinggi menjadi lebih kaya. Dari puisi tersebut juga Robinson mengekspresikan kecemburuannya terhadap kakaknya dan merelasikan kematian dari kakaknya dengan kematian tokoh Cory dalam puisi. Kematian mereka merupakan gambaran dari kegagalan manusia yang tidak pernah mensyukuri apa yang mereka miliki.

This is an analysis of a poem entitled Richard Cory written by Edwin Arlington Robinson. The poem itself got Pulitzer prizes and became famous after Robinson republished it. The objectives of this graduating paper are to correlate the poem with the society's condition when the poem was written and to find out the correlation of the poem to the poet's life experiences. The theory applied in this graduating paper is dynamic structuralism approach and the method used is library research. The poem Richard Cory was the primary data. Dictionaries, articles, encyclopedias, and books are also used as secondary data to support the analysis. Additional information is also accessed from the internet. It can be concluded that the poem is a reflection of the society of Gardiner, a place where the poet spent most of his life. In the poem, Robinson also conveys the social gap in America in the late nineteenth century, when the lower class had to struggle to live, while the upper class became richer. In the poem Robinson also expresses his jealousy to his brother and relates his brother's death to Cory's in the end of the poem. Their death's, are the description of human's failure to be grateful with what they have.
