Bushrangers in Peter Carey's True History of the Kelly Gang

Intisari Tulisan ini meneliti tentang bushrangers yang digambarkan di dalam novel True History of the Kelly Gang sebagai dampak dari keadaan sosial di Australia terutama pada masa awal pendudukan pada abad ke-19. Penulis meneliti fenomena ini untuk menjabarkan bagaimana keadaan sosial pada saat itu memunculkan bushrangers. Dengan menggunakan pendekatan mimetik, penulis membedakan beberapa hal yang terjadi di dalam sejarahdan di dalam novel True History of the Kelly Gang, seperti awal pendudukan di Australia, kehidupan para masyarakat di awal pendudukan Australia, pemerintah, polisi, dan bushrangers. Data dalam penelitian ini diperoleh dari beberapa buku, artikel, jurnal, dan website. Tulisan ini bertujuan untuk membuktikan bahwa para bushranger di kehidupan nyata memiliki banyak kesamaan dengan para bushranger di dalam novel True History of the Kelly Gang. Dalam hal ini, penulis menemukan lebih banyak persamaan dan sedikit perbedaan antara para bushranger di kehidupan nyata dan di dalam novel.

Abstract The paper examines bushrangers as the impact of social environment in Australia especially in the early settlement in 1800's as described in True History of the Kelly Gang. By examining this case, the writer of this paper clarifies the process by which the social environment produces bushrangers. Using mimetic as the approach in analyzing the literary work, the writer of this paper compares things in history and in True History of the Kelly Gang including the early settlement in Australia, lives of the settlers, the government, the police, and the bushrangers. Data have been collected from books, articles, journals, and websites. This paper aims to prove that bushrangers in the history have many similarities with bushrangers in the novel. The writer of this paper finds that bushrangers in the real life and in the novel have more similarities and less differences.
