RUANG PASCAKOLONIAL DALAM DOCTOR WOOREDDY'S PRESCRIPTION FOR ENDURING THE ENDING OF THE WORLD KARYA COLIN JOHNSON

Penelitian ini membahas salah satu karya yang ditulis oleh Colin Johnson atau Modrooroo yaitu sebuah novel berjudul Doctor Wooreddy’s Prescription for the Ending of the World untuk mengungkapkan konstruksi ruang kolonial Kulit Putih di Van Diemen’s Land serta menganalisis respon spasial pascakolonial yang muncul sebagai bentuk negosiasi terhadap ruang yang dikontestasikan. Teori pascakolonial tentang ruang digunakan untuk menjawab permasalahan tersebut. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian deskriptif-kualitatif yang dilakukan dengan menganalisis satuan-satuan dalam teks yang signifikan menggunakan teori pascakolonial tentang ruang, selanjutnya pembahasan dilakukan dengan menghubungkannya dengan data-data yang berasal dari luar teks untuk menjawab permasalahan penelitian diatas. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa kolonial Kulit Putih di Van Diemend’s Land mengkonstruksikan ruang kolonialnya dengan memunculkan chaos dilanjutkan dengan penerapan aturan (order) serta batas-batas ke dalamnya untuk menciptakan keteraturan. Ruang yang dibangun terbukti tidak mampu untuk memenuhi tujuannya tersebut dengan munculnya beragam kontradiksi ke dalam dirinya yang menjadikannya sebagai utopia semata. Chaos muncul di dalam tatanan atau stuktur ruang tersebut diikuti dengan pelanggaran-pelanggaran untuk melampaui batas–batas yang telah diciptakan kolonial untuk membentuk suatu tatanan atau struktur baru menjadi post-space. Namun tidak berhenti disini, post-space dalam prosesnya akan menjadi sebuah space baru yang akan memunculkan chaos baru, sehingga ruang akan terus dikonstruksi dan didekonstruksi secara terus menerus sebagai bentuk respon spasial ruang pascakolonial.

This research discusses one of Colin Johnson or Mudroroo’s novel entitled Doctor Wooreddy’s Prescription for the Ending of the World to reveal kolonial construction of space in Van Diemen’s Land and to analyze postcolonial spatial responses emerged as a form of negotiation toward the contested space. Postcololonial theory of space is applied to discuss the issues. This is a descriptive-qualitative research conducted by analyzing the significant textual units by applying postcolonial theory of space; the discussion is then conducted by relating them to the related data outside the text to answer those research problems. The result of this research shows that the White colonial in Van Diemen’s Land constructed their colonial space by arousing chaos, followed by establishing the order and borders to create a fixed boundary. The constructed space is proven fail to achieve its goal by arousing some self contradictions which make it lays as merely a utopia. Chaos arouses within the order or structure of the space followed by violations trespassing the colonial borders to create a new order or structure of a postspace. The process would not stop; post-space within its process will be a new space with new possibilities of chaos, thus, space will be continuously constructed and deconstructed as a form of spatial response of postcolonial space.
