PERUBAHAN DERAJAT KEASAMAN (pH) SALIVA SETELAH BERKUMUR REBUSAN DAUN SIRIH MERAH (Piper crocatum) KONSENTRASI 10%

Karies merupakan penyakit infeksi bakteri yang mengakibatkan kerusakan pada struktur gigi. Karies disebabkan oleh bakteri plak yang berkoloni di atas permukaan gigi. Bakteri menghasilkan asam sehingga menyebabkan karies. Sirih merah (Piper crocatum) sebagai tanaman herbal yang banyak tumbuh di Indonesia. Daun sirih merah mengandung alkaloid, flavonoid, tanin dan minyak atsiri diketahui memiliki aktivitas antibakteri. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui perubahan derajat keasaman (pH) saliva setelah berkumur rebusan daun sirih merah konsentrasi 10%. Subjek penelitian berjumlah 20 orang dibagi secara acak menjadi 2 kelompok yaitu kontrol dan perlakuan. Masing-masing kelompok terdiri dari 10 orang. Kelompok perlakuan berkumur rebusan daun sirih merah konsentrasi 10% dan kontrol, sedangkan kelompok kontrol berkumur akuades. Pengambilan saliva dilakukan pada pagi hari. Subjek diintruksikan mengumpulkan saliva selama 2 menit dan meludah ke pot saliva. Subjek diintruksikan berkumur menggunakan 10 ml obat kumur selama 30 detik. Pengukuran pH saliva menggunakan pH meter digital. Analisis data dengan uji statistik independent t-test (p<0,05). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan adanya peningkatan bermakna derajat keasaman (pH) saliva pada 5-30 menit setelah kumur rebusan daun sirih merah konsentrasi 10%. Disimpulkan bahwa berkumur rebusan daun sirih merah konsentrasi 10% dapat menaikkan derajat keasaman (pH) saliva.

Caries is an infectious bacterial disease which cause destruction of the tooth structure. Caries is caused by oral bacterial plaque accumulated on the surface of the tooth. The bacteria produce acid and thus cause caries. Red betel leaf (Piper crocatum) is a herbal plant that commonly found in Indonesia. Piper crocatum contains alkaloid, flavonoid, tannin, essential oil which have antibacterial activities. The study was aimed to determine the change of salivary pH after gargling using 10% red betel leaves decoction. The subjects of this study were 20 persons who divided randomly into 2 groups i.e control and treatment group. Each group consisted of 10 persons. In the treatment group, the subjects gargled using 10% red betel leaves decoction, while in the control group, the subject gargled using aquades. Saliva samples were collected early in the morning. The subjects were instructed to collect the saliva for 2 minutes and spit it into tube. The subjects were then instructed to gargle using 10 ml of mouthwash for 30 seconds. Salivary pH was measured by digital pH-meter. The data analysis was conducted by independent t-test statistic (p<0,05). The result of this study showed that the salivary pH increased significantly in 5-30 minutes after gargling using 10% red betel leaves decoction. It was concluded that gargling using 10% red betel leaves decoction increases salivary pH.
