FATHER AND SON RELATIONSHIP AS SEEN IN VIRGINIA WOOLF'S TO THE LIGHT HOUSE

Skripsi ini menganalisis hubungan ayah dan anak, Mr. Ramsay dan James Ramsay, dalam novel Virginia Woolf yang berjudul To the Lighthouse. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menemukan masalah hubungan ayah-anak dan penggambaran hubungan tersebut. Analisis skripsi ini menggunakan pendekatan objektif, yang berfokus pada karakter. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah studi pustaka dan membaca cermat novel To the Lighthouse. Dari hasil penelitian, ditemukan masalah dari kedua karakter yang dapat mempengaruhi hubungan mereka. Mr. Ramsay adalah seseorang yang selalu mengasihani diri sendiri, sedangkan James Ramsay mengalami kecenderungan Oedipus kompleks dan memiliki kecenderungan karakter psikologis yang disebut self-serving bias. Seiring berjalannya waktu, kedua karakter mencapai resolusi dan memenuhi kebutuhan-kebutuhan mereka. Keduanya mencoba untuk memahami satu sama lain dalam perannya masing-masing, sehingga hubungan mereka menjadi lebih baik.

This graduating paper analyzes the relationship of the father and the son, Mr. Ramsay and James Ramsay, in Virginia Woolf's To the Lighthouse. This research's objectives are to discover the problems of the relationship and to describe the relationship. The analysis is done by using Objective approach, focusing on the character. The primary data of the research is the literary work, To the Lighthouse by Virginia Woolf, while the secondary data are taken from sources dealing with the character, actions and thoughts. The method of this research is library research and a close reading of the novel. From the research, the result reveals the characteristics of the two characters in psychological aspect that can influence the father and son relationship. From Mr. Ramsay, self-pity is found, while James Ramsay Oedipus complex and self-serving bias are found. They are trying to understand each other, as well as gaining the understanding of each other of their own roles. Thus, the father and son relationship is found to be progressing to the better.
