INDIVIDUAL SELF IN RELATION WITH PARENTS, CLASSMATES, AND PROFESSORS AMONG UNIVERSITY STUDENTS

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk merumuskan gambaran self pada mahasiswa saat berelasi dengan orangtua, teman, dosen, dan self sebagai individu. Penelitian ini menggunakan multi-method dengan menggunakan metode kualitatif dan kuantitatif. Responden penelitian ini adalah mahasiswa S1 sejumlah 548 orang. Data penelitian diambil dengan wawancara personal dan survei. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa gambaran self pada mahasiswa saat berelasi dengan orangtua, dosen, dan teman memiliki ciri khas masing-masing serta memiliki pola relasi masing-masing. Gambaran self pada mahasiswa saat berelasi dengan orangtua memiliki ciri khas self yang melekat dengan orangtua. Gambaran self pada mahasiswa saat berelasi dengan teman memiliki ciri khas yaitu gambaran diri yang mengutamakan pertukaran tindakan (exchange) dan disesuaikan dengan gradasi dengan teman. Gambaran self pada mahasiswa saat berelasi dengan dosen memiliki ciri khas yaitu self yang mengutakaman tindakan yang adil (equity) dan bergerak dari satu titik ke titik yang lain pada garis kontinum. Gambaran self sebagai diri sendiri pada mahasiswa memiliki ciri khas adalah self yang memiliki dorongan untuk mencapai keseimbangan intrapersonal dan interpersonal. Gambaran self pada mahasiswa adalah bersifat dinamis yang menciptakan kompleksitas diri dan mengarah pada konsep diri yang interdependensi. Diri interdependensi erat dengan budaya kolektif pada mahasiswa. Kolektivitas pada budaya yang dimiliki mahasiswa disesuaikan dengan posisi pada tingkatan inidividu dalam relasi hirarkis. Posisi ini menentukan bentuk kolektivitas self dengan relasi yang ada. Kolektif vertikal terlihat saat mahasiswa menjadi subordinat dan kolektif horizontal terlihat saat mahasiswa berada pada posisi relasi sejajar dengan orang-orang yang ada di sekitarnya.

The study aimed to construct self in relation with parents, classmates, professors, and self as individual. This study used multi-method which involved qualitative and quantitative method. The respondents of this study were 548 undergraduate students. The data was collected by using personal interview and survey. The result showed that self in relation with parents, classmates, and professors have their own uniqueness and they have relation patterns. Self in relation with parents has an intimate relation between individual and the parents. Therefore, the self tends to attach on parents’ self. Whereas, the self in relation with classmates emphasizes exchange between the self and the classmates’ self. In this relation, the self considers the level of closeness that is represented by the quality of friendship. In the other hand, self in relation with professors stresses on equity and it has curtain movement to lead the self for identifying in what level of closeness the self and the professors’ self. Moreover, the self in relations with professors brings the quality of the relation between self and professors’ self. Self as individual is described as an establishment between the interpersonal and intrapersonal aspect in the self. In general, self among university students can be inferred as dynamic-self that creates complexity and the self which leads individual to be interdependence. Interdependence-self is considered as collectivistic culture that the students have. This collective culture shows that students adjust themselves into the position in hierarchy level. This hierarchy level divides the type of collectivistic into vertical collectivistic and horizontal collectivistic. Vertical collectivistic brings self to be subordinate and horizontal collective brings self to equality with others.
