Reflexive Personal Metadiscourse in Research Articles on Language Learning

2014 | Skripsi | SASTRA INGGRISSkripsi ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi fungsi-fungsi metawacana personal refleksif dalam artikel riset tentang pembelajaran bahasa. Data untuk riset ini diambil dari 17 artikel riset, yang mencapai jumlah 177,309 kata, yang dipublikasikan dalam Language Learning and Technology, sebuah jurnal refereed mengenai pembelajaran dan teknologi bahasa. Secara keseluruhan, 66 penggunaan metawacana personal refleksif ditemukan menjalankan 15 fungsi yang berbeda. Sebagian besar (63,64%) digunakan untuk mengekspresikan fungsi Discourse Organization. 13,64% digunakan untuk mengekspresikan sebuah fungsi penting lain, yaitu Discourse Act Labels, dengan mana para penulis dapat menyatakan identitas dan suara mereka atas klaim-klaim, proposisi-proposisi, dan pernyataan-pernyataan. Melalui Discourse Act Labels, terutama fungsi Arguing, interaksi social dan negosiasi makna dalam penulisan akademik berlangsung. Audience Interaction hanya ditemui sedikit (4 penggunaan). Hasil-hasil ini menunjukkan bahwa metawacana personal refleksif, walaupun memiliki kegunaan yang beragam, belum banyak menjadi pilihan dalam penulisan akademik.
This research is an attempt to identify the functions of reflexive personal metadiscourse in research articles on language learning. Data for this research were taken from 17 research articles, totaling 177,309 words, published in Language Learning and Technology, an online refereed journal of language learning and technology. In total, 66 instances of reflexive personal metadiscourse were found serving 15 different functions. Most of them (63.64%) were used to express the Discourse Organization function. 13.64% were used to express another important function, which is Discourse Act Labels, by which authors could manifest their identity and voice over claims, propositions, and statements. Through Discourse Act Labels, especially the function of Arguing, social interaction and negotiation of meaning in academic writing ensue. Audience Interaction was found insignificant in number (6.06%). These results seem to suggest that reflexive personal metadiscourse, though having various functionalities, has yet to gain considerable favor in academic writing.
