Errors in the Use of Prepositions of Place by Seventh Graders of Madrasah Tsanawiyah Al-Hamidiyah Depok Academic Year 2013/2014

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi kesalahan-kesalahan dilakukan oleh siswa dan juga penyebab-penyebab dari kesalahan-kesalahan yang dilakukan oleh siswa dalam penggunaan preposisi tempat. Penelitian ini mengklasifikasi kesalahan-kesalahan dalam penggunaan preposisi tempat berdasarkan jenis dan fungsinya. Penelitian ini hanya terpusat pada penggunaan tiga preposisi tempat saja, yaitu in, on dan at. Data yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini diambil dari tes yang berisi pertanyaan-pertanyaan mengenai penggunaan preposisi tempat in, on dan at. Penulis memilih siswa-siswa kelas tujuh di Madrasah Tsanawiyah Al-Hamidiyah sebagai peserta tes. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa dari 57 siswa, kesalahan terbanyak ditemukan pada penggunaan preposisi tempat at dengan total persentase rata-rata kesalahan 60.45%, disusul oleh preposisi tempat on dengan persentase sebesar 57.48% dan preposisi tempat in dengan persentase sebesar 40.38%. Selain itu, dari total 34 pertanyaan, terdapat 33 kasus kesalahan yang disebabkan oleh campur tangan interlingual. Selebihnya, terdapat 14 kasus kesalahan yang disebabkan oleh generalisasi yang berlebihan dan 8 kasus kesalahan yang disebabkan oleh ketidaktahuan mengenai pembatasan aturan. Hasil tersebut menggambarkan kemampuan para siswa yang kurang paham mengenai penggunaan preposisi tempat.

This research attempts to identify students’ errors and also the sources of students’ errors on the use of prepositions of place. It classifies the errors in the use of prepositions of place based on its type and function. This research focuses only on the use of three prepositions of place those are in, on, and at. The data used in this research were taken from the test containing questions about the use of prepositions of place in, on, and at. The researcher chooses seventh graders of Madrasah Tsanawiyah Al-Hamidiyah Depok as the respondents of the test. Theresults show that from 57 students, the most errors were found in the use of preposition of place at with total average percentage error 60.45%, followed by preposition of place on with 57.48% and preposition of place in with 40.38%. In addition, out of total 34 questions, there were 33 cases of errors caused by interligual interference. Furthermore, there were 14 cases of errors caused by over-generalization and 8 cases of errors caused by ignorance of rule restrictions. The results seem to reflect the ability of the students which do not clearlyunderstand about the use of prepositions of place.
