Inseminasi buatan adalah suatu proses memasukan semen hewan jantan dan secara manual dimasukan ke dalam saluran reproduksi betina. Proses pengoleksian semen, pemeriksaan mutu, pengenceran hingga diakhiri pada proses pembekuan merupakan suatu proses yang sangat penting dalam upaya memperoleh semen yang berkualitas. Karya tulis ini merupakan hasil Praktik Kerja Lapangan di Balai Inseminasi Buatan (BIB) Ungaran Semarang, tentang Karakteristik dan Kualitas semen sapi Brahman periode bulan Agustus-Desember 2013. Karakteristik semen meliputi pengamatan makroskopik (warna,konsistensi, volume dan pH) dan pengamatan secara mikroskopik (gerakan massa, mottilitas, kosentrasi, persentase sperma hidup dan abnormalitas sperma). Kualitas semen melalui beberapa tahapan test, test after thawing dan test water inkubator sebagai prosedur standar dalam menentukan ketahanan dan daya hidup semen sebelum di edarkan. Balai Inseminasi Buatan (BIB) Ungaran memiliki tiga ekor sapi Brahman sebagai bahan sampel dengan kode sapi 40411, 40912 dan 40913. Hasil penelitian rata-rata dari ketiga sampel tersebut secara berturut-turut adalah Warna : krem, pH : 6,65 ± 0,104, Volume : 5,81 ± 2,468, Konsistensi : kental, Motilitas (%) : 49,56 ± 21,14, Gerakan massa : ++ dan Kosentrasi (𝑥106) : 1446,45 ± 570,74. Dari hasil penelitian dari ke tiga sampel menunjukan bahwa semen sapi Brahman di Balai Inseminasi Buatan (BIB) Ungaran termasuk baik.

Artificial insemination (AI) is the process collecting sperm cells from a male animal and manually depositing them into the reproductive tract of female. Semen collection process, quality inspection, dilution until terminated the freezing process is a very important process in an attempt to semen quality. This paper is the result of Field Work Practice in the Central Artificial Insemination (BIB) Unggaran Semarang, about the characteristics and semen quality Brahman cattle period August-December 2013. Characteristics of semen include macroscopic observations (color, consistency, volume and pH) and microscopic observation (mass movement, motiliti, concentration, percentage of live and death sperm, and sperm abnormalities). Semen quality through several stages of testing, test after thawing and water incubator as a standard procedure in determining the resilience and vitality of semen before circulated. Center for Artificial Insemination (BIB) Unggaran has three cows Brahman as the sample material with cow code 40411, 40912 and 40913. The results of the study the average of three samples in a row is Color : beige, pH : 6.65 ± 0.104, Volume: 5.81 ± 2.468, Consistency : thick, motility (%) : 49.56 ± 21.14, mass movement : + + and concentration (𝑥106) : 1446.45 ± 570.74. Research results from the three samples showed that the semen Brahman cattle in the Central Artificial Insemination (BIB) Unggaran included either.
