RUANG PASCAKOLONIAL DALAM THE GOD OF SMALL THINGS KARYA ARUNDHATI ROY

India adalah salah satu masyarakat pascakolonial yang dualistik, dalam pengertian India masih memegang tradisi India sendiri sekaligus menjalankan budaya yang ditinggalkan penguasa kolonial. Tradisi dan kebudayaan kolonial tersebut sama-sama memiliki aturan yang mengontrol kehidupan masyarakat, sementara tidak semua masyarakat merasa nyaman dengan aturan yang ada. Karena itu, muncul permasalahan tentang bagaimana upaya masyarakat untuk keluar dari atau bertahan dalam batas aturan-aturan tersebut. Salah satu Indian English Novel, yaitu The God of Small Things karya Arundhati Roy, sekilas membicarakan kondisi masyarakat pascakolonial yang dualistik. Selama ini, penelitian-penelitian terhadap novel ini belum membahas strategi masyarakat keluar dari tekanan aturan, ataupun mengupas pentingnya ruang dalam kajian pascakolonial. Dengan latar belakang tersebut maka novel ini dianalisis untuk mengetahui representasi Barat dan Timur dalam struktur ruang pascakolonial India beserta strategi pascakolonial yang digunakan untuk keluar dari batas-batas. Analisis dilakukan dengan menghubungkan satuan-satuan tekstual yang signifikan dalam teks, menjelaskan konstruksi Timur-Barat yang ada beserta trasgresinya, kemudian mencari ruang alternatif atau strategi spasial yang muncul untuk mensiasati trasgresi tersebut dengan cara mengoposisikan order dengan chaos. Teori yang digunakan ialah teori ruang pascakolonial yang dikemukakan Sara Upstone dalam bukunya Spatial Politics in the Postcolonial Novel. Kesimpulan dari hasil penelitian ini adalah bahwa dalam konteks ruang domestik dan sekitarnya, novel The God of Small Things menunjukkan representasi Barat dan Timur. Representasi ruang tersebut memiliki batas-batas yang mengontrol kehidupan manusia dengan order dan border, yang akhirnya memunculkan transgresi dan chaos. Kekacauan tersebut memicu adanya postspace yang pada awalnya berada di luar rumah. Namun, suatu ketika novel ini menunjukkan bahwa post-space di luar rumah juga bisa dikendalikan, dan sebaliknya order dalam rumah menjadi post-space. Dengan demikian, novel ini selalu berupaya membongkar konstruksi yang dibangun termasuk konstruksi pascakolonial sendiri karena permasalahan berangkat dari kondisi pascakolonial dalam masyarakat India yang dualistik dimana ia melampaui orientalisme dalam artian tidak membuat oposisi antara Barat dan Timur tetapi keduanya bersifat represif. Dengan kata lain, novel ini menghancurkan setiap ruang, bahkan aturan yang dibuat sendiri pun harus dibatalkan untuk menciptakan ruang-ruang baru lagi. India is one of the dualistic post-colonial societies. It means that India still holds its own Indian traditions and runs the culture left by the colonial at the same time. Both colonial and Indian culture have rules that control human life. Meanwhile, not all people are comfortable with the existing rules. Therefore, it leads the problem about how society attempts to escape from or survive within the rules. One of the Indian English novels, The God of Small Things written by Arundhati Roy, seems to discuss the dualistic condition of Indian postcolonial society. Furthermore, studies on this novel has not discussed the strategy of society to escape from the rules that oppressed, or described the importance of space in postcolonial studies. Based on the background above, this novel was analyzed to reveal the representation of the East and the West in the post-colonial India and its postcolonial spatial structure and the strategies used to get out of the borders. The analysis was conducted by connecting the significant textual units in the text, explaining the construction of the West and East including its transgression, then looking for an alternative space or spatial strategies to anticipate the transgression by making oposition between order and chaos. The theory used was postcolonial space theory proposed Sara Upstone, in her book Spatial Politics in the Postcolonial Novel. In conclusion, this study proved that in the context of domestic space and its surroundings, this novel, The God of Small Things, showed the representation of the West and the East. The representation those spaces had boundaries in order to control human life with order and border, then it caused transgression and chaos. The chaos led to post-space or that were previously outside the home. However, once the novel showed that the post-space existed outside the home could be controlled, and the order in the house turned to post-space. Thus, the novel was deconstructing the construction, including the construction of postcolonial itself. It happened since the problem began in dualistic conditions of post-colonial Indian where it went beyond orientalism. It meant that there was no oposition between the West and the East but both of them were repressive instead. In other words, this novel destroyed every space, even cancelled its own rules constructed to create new spaces again. Keywords: colonial, post-colonial, chaos, post-space.
