THE CHARACTERISTICS OF ASTHMA PATIENTS AND EVALUATION OF THE TREATMENT IN RSUP DR. SARDJITO, YOGYAKARTA

Asthma is a disorder or condition that is caused by chronically hyperreactive and inflamed airways, punctuated by acute episodes of reversible narrowing of the airways. The aim of this study is to understand the characteristics of asthma patients, evaluate the anti-asthmatic drug pattern and observe the outcome. This is an observational study performed retrospectively on outpatients in RSUP Dr. Sardjito, Yogyakarta period 2013. Data was taken from outpatients medical records suffering from asthma and evaluated descriptively. A total of 120 medical records out of 145 cases have been used in this study according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Out of 120 patients, a very large number suffer from mild persistent asthma 42.5% (n=51) with the level of high eosinophil 70.8% (n=85). Common risk factors found from the characteristics were at the age of 16 to 30 years 35.8% (n=43) which can be classified as young adults, females 69.2% (n=83), residence of rural residency 64.2% (n=77), and types of occupation for privates 29.2% (n=35). Uncommon risk factors found were obesity. Out of 120 patients, 25.8% (n=31) suffered from hypertension as the most common combined illness. Evaluation on treatment showed 81.7% (n=98) polytherapy with short-acting β2 agonist + theophylline 12.7% (n=13) as the most common dual antiasthmatic drugs used while 18.3% (n=22) were on monotherapy with short-acting β2 agonist 82.5% (n=99) as the most common single anti-asthmatic drug given. On the prevention of asthma, surgery can be performed but due to inadequate facilities accessible, there were no cases of this procedure being performed therefore data cannot be analysed. The outcome of therapy stated 60.8% (n=73) were with controlled symptoms during the year 2013 in RSUP Dr. Sardjito, Yogyakarta. The characteristics of patients play a vital role in developing asthma and there are different patterns of treatment for patients based on effectiveness of antiasthmatics in controlling the asthma attacks.
