Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian filsafat ilmu sosial dengan inti bahasan teori strukturasi Anthony Giddens. Teori strukturasi dibangun secara ekletik melalui proses panjang kritik dan sintesis. Oleh karena itu penelitian ini juga mengulas teori sosial modern dan berbagai pemikiran yang berpengaruh untuk menjelaskan posisi intelektual Giddens. Fokus penelitian ini terletak pada dualitas struktur dimana struktur merupakan sarana sekaligus hasil dari praktek sosial. Adapun metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah penelitian kepustakaan dengan analisis: interpretasi, deduksi-induksi, refleksi-kritis, dan deskripsi. Hasil penelitian ini terletak pada posisi penting aktor sosial yang menggunakan dan menghasilkan struktur dalam praktek-praktek sosial yang dilibatinya. Struktur sosial tidak hanya memberi batasan tetapi juga memungkinkan aktor untuk bertindak dengan pertimbangannya sendiri dalam interaksi. Oleh karena itu, asumsi filsafat yang ditemukan dalam pemikiran Giddens adalah tentang kebebasan manusia, kemampuannya untuk berpikir tentang dirinya sendin, dan tentang modernitas refleksif.

This research tries to explore Anthony Giddens’ theory of structuration. In building up his theory Giddens uses many resources. He criticizes and synthesizes them with the aim of constructing a new theory. Therefore, he is considered as an eclectic writer. Inevitably this research has to discuss various streams of classical as well as modern social sciences in order to explain Giddens’ intellectual position. This study is focussed on Giddens’ theory of duality of structure. According to Giddens a structure is the medium and the result of social practices. Based on the library research this study uses interpretation, deduction-induction, critical reflection, and description to find out the core of Giddens’s theory. The result of this study shows the important position of social actor who uses and creates structure through social practices. Social structure does not only constraint but it enables the actors to act with their own consideration. The philosophical assumptions behind Giddens’ theory are recognition of human freedom and the ability of self-reflection as well as the concept of reflexive-modernity.
