Agama dan mobilitas sosial petani :: Studi kasus pada petani bawang merah di Brebes

Perubahan sistem ekonomi dari sistem ekonomi agraris ke sistem ekonomi industri, memberi pengaruh pada petani bawang merah Wanasari Brebes. Yaitu dari sistem ekonomi subsisten, berproses kearah ekonomi pasar. Artinya hasil pertanian yang semula hanya diperuntukan bagi kebutuhan keluarga, berubah orientasinya ke pasar dalam rangka akumulasi modal usaha tani mereka. Dalam penelitian ini dikaji bagaimana agama sebagai sumber inspirasi (dari para petani), merespon perkembangan ekonomi. Apabila ditarik polarisasi sifat kontradiktif antara agama dan ekonomi, maka masalahnya menjadi, bagaimana agama yang bersifat irasional, merespon perkembangan ekonomi yang bersifat rasional. Dengan menggunakan teori Weber, bahwa ide-ide agama berperan dalam meningkatkan perubahan sosial dan teori hngsionalisme Durkheim, maka masalah tersebut dikaji dengan seksama. Ide-ide agama dipercaya sebagai sumber kebenaran mutlak, diwujudkan dengan menggunakan aka1 dan memberi pengaruh dalam perilaku ekonomi. Melaksanakan ibadah haji dan berwakaf, sebagai prinsip kebenaran yang dipercayai dilaksanakan dengan persyaratan perilaku ekonomi untuk mewujudkan prinsip kebenaran tersebut. Aktifitas ini menyebabkan para petani berbeda dalam status sosial ekonomi mereka sehingga tejadi mobilitas sosial dikalangan mereka. Tejadi perubahan status sosial ekonomi dari status sosial ekonomi rendah, menengah tinggi dan sebaliknya. Mobilitas statfus sosial dikalangan petani bawang merah Wanasari Brebes hingga saat ini, masih berlangsung

The change of economic system, from agricultural to industrial, had influenced onion farmers in Wanasari Brebes. That is, from subsisten economic system, proceed to market oriented. That means the agricultural products that at first provided only for family needs changed its orientation into market oriented in order to accumulate their farming investment. This research tried to question of how the religion (as a source of inspiration) could respond economic growth. In the other hand, regarding the contradictive characteristic between economic and religion, this probledquestion becomes of how religion (which has irrational characteristic) could respond the "rational" economic growth. This research is explained by using Functionalism Theory of Durkheim and Weber Theory ( which marks that religion ideas has a role in enhancing social change). Indeed, the religion ideas are believed as absolute source of thruth, realized by using the ratio and influences economic activities. To be able to obey all religion orders (which is believed as the principals of absolute thruth), one should work harder, so that they could perform haji, and pay anykinds of charities. This, in turn, differentiate the social and economic status of farmers as also causes social mobility within the farmers. In fact, there is social and economic mobility from the lowest status to the higher one and on the other way round. Thus, social mobility among the onion farmers of Wanasari Brebes, is still running until this time.
