The Man’s Personality as Seen in His Attitude toward the Lady in Elliot’s “Portrait of a Lady”

Penelitian ini mendiskusikan kepribadian karakter utama yang berfokus pada sikapnya di dalam karya Eliot “Portrait of a Lady”. Fokus utama dalam penelitian ini adalah karakter utama, ada dua karakter utama di dalam analisis ini. Karakter yang pertama adalah the Man sebagai karakter utama pertama, dan the Lady sebagai karakter utama kedua. the Lady di dalam penelitian ini mempunyai fungsi untuk mempengaruhi sikap the Man melalui tindakannya selama pertemuan mereka dan hubungan mereka. Tujuan dari skripsi ini adalah untuk menemukan kepribadian the Man yang dilihat dari sikapnya terhadap the Lady. Kemudian, pendekatan psikologi digunakan dalam penelitian ini untuk mencapai tujuan penelitian. Teori psikologi yang digunakan adalah teori kepribadian dari Sigmund Freud. Teori yang digunakan terdiri dari sistem kepribadian seperti halnya Id, Ego, dan Superego yang berhubungan dengan cara berpikir the Man dan perilaku the Man. Analisis ini menjelaskan tentang sikap pria terhadap wanita. Penulis di dalam skripsi ini menggunakan penelitian kepustakaan sebagai metode penelitian dengan bantuan beberapa referensi. Akan tetapi, skripsi ini menganalisis karakter dengan cara menginterpretasi karya sebagai data. Analisis menunjukkan sikap – sikap the Man terhadap the Lady. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa the Man mempunyai sikap dan kepribadian yang baik terhadap the Lady. Dia bersikap tegas therhadap keputusannya untuk tidak memiliki sebuah hubungan perciantaan dengan the Lady karena terhalang oleh status sosial mereka yang berbeda. Meskipun keduanya mempunyai perasaan yang sama dia menahan perasaannya dan pergi meninggalkan the Lady di akhir puisi. Kata Kunci: Kepribadian, Sikap, Cara Berpikir, Perilaku

This research discusses the main characters’ personality which focuses on his attitude in the work of Eliot’s “Portrait of a Lady”. The core of the study is the main characters. There are two main characters in this analysis. The first main character is the Man and the second main character is the Lady. The Lady in this research has a function to influence the Man’s attitude by her actions during their meeting and relationship. The objective of this graduating paper is to find the Man’s personality as seen in his attitude toward the Lady. The psychological approach is applied in this research to analyze the personality of the Man. The psychology theory used is the theory of personality by Sigmund Freud. The theory consists of the systems of personality such as Id, Ego and Superego which are related to the Man’s way of thinking and the Man’s behavior. The analysis explains about the Man’s attitude toward the Lady. The writer in this graduating paper uses library research as the method of the study with the help of some references. However, this graduating paper analyzes the character by interpreting the work as the primary data. The analysis shows the Man’s attitude toward the Lady. The result is that he has good attitude and he has a good personality. He is firm with his decision not to have an intimate relationship with the Lady which is forbidden by their different social status. Although they have mutual feelings, the Man restrains his feeling of love toward the Lady and leaves her at the end of the poem. Keywords: Personality, Attitude, Way of Thinking, Behavior
