Influence of metformin and valsartan towards BMI in metabolic syndrome

Background: Valsartan and Metformin are drugs used to control metabolic abnormality in metabolic syndrome, there have been reports in reduction of body mass index in both the drug. The aim of the present study is to further investigate the effect of these drugs towards the body mass index in metabolic syndrome subject to further strengthen the use of metformin and valsartan in the ever increasing pandemic of obesity. Methods: Using a one group pretest posttest design, we compare the changes in body mass index after treatment. In total 22 patients were recruited and undergo treatment with metformin(500mg) and valsartan(80mg) for 12 weeks. Results: there was no significant difference in the body mass index before treatment (Mean= 27.51, SD= 2.95) and after treatment (Mean= 27.47, SD= 2.77); t(21)=0.284, p=0.779, even though the result shows a slight decrease of 0.04 kg/m2.
