Background: Trichomoniasisis the most common nonviral sexually transmitted disease worldwide which is caused by protozoan parasite Trichomonas vaginalis.Globally, trichomoniasis affects approximately 57-180 million people, with the majority living in developing countries.Contraception use in Indonesia is the common thing. However, some studies showed that the use of contraception can increase the risk to get this infection though it remains controversial. Objective: To know whether there is relation between the use of contraception and the acquisition of trichomoniasis. Method:This cross-sectional study was conducted among married women with vaginal discharge complain or Trichomonas vaginalis (+) in wet smear. The data was taken from medical record (January 2010-July 2013)in Anatomical Pathology Department, Universitas Gadjah Mada, Yogyakarta. By adjusting age, pregnancy and comorbidity, of 10.308 women, only 336 women included in this study. The analysis was done by testing the association between variable groups using chi-square test or Fisher’s exact test if needed. Result:Of 336 women, 32 people got trichomoniasis. Among the contraception user, IUD group had the highest prevalence of infection. Whereas, OC and injectable contraception group had lower prevalence than control group. However, those difference was not statistically significant (p>0.05). While, the difference of trichomoniasis prevalence among condom and implant group toward control group were not defined. Conclusion: There is no relation between the use of contraception either non-hormonal (IUD) or hormonal (OC and injectable contraception) and the acquisition of Trichomoniasis.
