THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN DURATION OF UNTREATED PSYCHOSIS AND RELAPSE AMONG EARLY PSYCHOSIS PATIENT IN YOGYAKARTA

Background: Early psychosis means first episode of psychosis or first onset of psychosis. Usually or an estimated 80% of patient will experience a first episode in adolescence or early adult life or between 16 to 30 of age, an important time for the development of identity, relationships and long-term vocational plans. If early psychosis is not recognized and treated properly, these developmental may be impaired. Objective: To determine the relationship between duration of untreated psychosis and relapse in early psychosis patient. Methods: Cross-sectional study with 100 subjects of early psychosis patients and caregivers from Dr Sardjito hospital, Ghrasia Hospital and Puri Nirmala Hospital and other hospital in Yogyakarta who have given their consent to involve in this research. Duration of untreated psychosis can be calculated from the first onset of symptom provided by the caregiver and the date of the treatement is initiated in the patient control card. Re-hospitalization can be obtained from patient control card and from caregiver. Results: This study shows that in the short DUP group 5 patients or 7.1% relapse, while in the long DUP group there is 7 patients or 23.3% relapse. Based on the p value (0.022) there is significant correlation between DUP and relapse. Conclusion: There is relationship between duration of untreated psychosis and relapse. It is statistically significant with p value 0.022.
