Background : Atrial septal defect is one of the most common congenital heart defects which is frequently diagnosed in adults and many happen to have concurrent pulmonary hypertension. There are three main types of atrial septal defect and there has not been any research that studies how the types affect incidence of pulmonary hypertension. Objectives : The objective of this study is to compare the proportion of types of defects on adult atrial septal defect patients with severe and non-severe pulmonary hypertension. Method : This was a retrospective study using the data from atrial septal defect registry. The survey was conducted in Department of Cardiology and Vascular Medicine FM UGM and Dr. Sardjito Hospital, Yogyakarta. The data analysis was done in December 2013 using IBM SPSS 20. Result : The proportion of ASD secundum with non-severe pulmonary hypertension is the highest, followed by ASD secundum with severe pulmonary hypertension. However, a chi-square analysis proved the statistic to be insignificant (p=0.37). Conclusion: Based on the results obtained, there is no difference in comparison of proportions of types of defects on adult atrial septal defect patients with severe and non-severe pulmonary hypertension.
