Background: Problem-based learning (PBL) is commonly utilize in many nursing education. The learning activity of PBL focuses on tutorial group discussion. This is a good method to train the self-directed learning (SDL) ability. The relationship between SDL and student achievement has been widely discussed. While the relationship between SDL and student performance in tutorial group discussion has not been discussed yet. Objective: To describe the relationship between self-directed learning and student performance in PBL tutorials among undergraduate nursing students in the faculty of medicine UGM. Method: This study was quantitative research with a cross sectional design. They were ninety-seven undergraduate nursing students (first year to fourth year). Selfdirected learning ability was measured with Self-Directed Learning Instrument and student performance was measured by Instrument for the Assessment of Student Performance in PBL Tutorials. Result: Self-directed learning was positively related with student performance in problem-based learning tutorial among undergraduate nursing students in the faculty of medicine UGM (r=0,571; p<0,05). The majority of them (74,8%) reached a moderate level of self-directed learning. The majority of student performance achievement in tutorials (52,3%) were under overall mean score (X=3.93). Conclusion: Self-directed learning was positively related with student performance in PBL tutorials among undergraduate nursing students in the faculty of medicine UGM
