Pemanfaatan teknologi informasi dan komunikasi (TIK) beberapa tahun terakhir telah masuk ke desa-desa dan komunitas. Salah satunya adalah Desa Timbulharjo, Sewon, Bantul yang sejak 2012 lalu memanfaatkan SMS sebagai sarana pertukaran informasi. SMS yang semula hanya digunakan untuk komunikasi person to person, oleh sekelompok pemuda Timbulharjo yang memiliki skill justru dimodifikasi untuk komunikasi masal. Platform komunikasi yang diberi nama SMS MK-160 Karakter ini memungkinkan pengiriman informasi secara serentak (broadcast) kepada warga komunitas berdasarkan kategori tertentu (lokasi wilayah pedukuhan, jenis kelamin, usia, profesi, minat). Penelitian ini berupaya mengeksplorasi bagaimana dinamika sosial dari warga Timbulharjo yang identitas kulturalnya masih kuat dalam memanfaatkan SMS MK-160 Karakter. Konsep komunitas, Teori Uses and Gratifications, serta Model Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) digunakan sebagai pisau iris dalam penelitian ini. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa SMS MK-160 Karakter dimanfaatkan dengan antusias oleh warga. Namun ada dua hal yang perlu dikritisi lebih lanjut terkait keberadaan gatekeeper yang bisa memunculkan kelompok elit serta isu overload information. Penelitian ini diharapkan bisa menjadi masukan bagi komunitas atau institusi lain yang ingin mengadopsi platform komunikasi ini atupun mengembangkan media yang baru sesuai kebutuhan dan peluang di komunitas masing-masing.

Utilization of information and communication technology (ICT) recent years have entered the villages and communities.One of these villages is Timbulharjo, Sewon, Bantul, in which since 2012 have used SMS as a platformn of information exchange. SMS was originally only used for person to person communication, but by a group of young men in Timbulharjo who have the skill, SMS was modified for mass communication. The communication platform named SMS MK - 160 Character. This paltform allows sending information simultaneously (broadcast) to the citizens of the community by a specific category (location, gender, age, profession, interests). This study seeks to explore how the social dynamics of the Timbulharjo residents who still have strong cultural identity in the use of SMS MK - 160 Character SMS. Community, Uses and Gratification Theory and Model Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) are key concept in this study. The result showed that SMS MK - 160 Character used enthusiastically by the citizens. But there are two things that need to be viewed more critically related to the existence of gatekeeper who can bring out the elite and the issue of information overload . This study is expected to be input to the community or other institutions who will adopt this communication platform or develop a new media according to the needs and opportunities in their respective communities.
