Students’ Errors in the Use of Grammatical Collocations

Skripsi ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi kesalahan-kesalahan yang terjadi saat menggunakan kolokasi gramatikal yang dihasilkan oleh mahasiswa Jurusan Sastra Inggris FIB UGM. Cakupan penelitian ini meliputi empat tipe kolokasi gramatikal yang berhubungan dengan preposisi, yakni Kata Benda + Preposisi, Kata Sifat + Preposisi, Kata Kerja + Preposisi, dan Preposisi + Kata Benda. Subyek penelitian ini adalah dua puluh mahasiswa Jurusan Sastra Inggris FIB UGM dari masing-masing angkatan 2012 dan 2010. Data yang digunakan dalam skripsi ini didapat dengan menggunakan tes yang disusun terdiri dari empat tipe kolokasi gramatikal. Hasil yang terdapat dalam penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa mahasiswa angkatan 2012 menghasilkan 410 kesalahan (53.52%) dan mahasiswa angkatan 2010 menghasilkan 356 kesalahan (46.47%). Secara spesifik, masalah yang dihadapai mahasiswa secara keseluruhan adalah pada Tipe Kata Sifat + Preposisi (30.28%) dengan presentase tertinggi. Frekuensi angka kesalahan tertinggi kedua ditempati oleh Tipe Kata Benda + Preposisi (26.89%). Posisi berikutnya diikuti oleh Tipe Preposisi + Kata Benda (26.63%). Di posisi terakhir dengan frekuensi kesalahan terendah ditempati oleh Tipe Kata Kerja + Preposisi (16.18%). Kesalahan-kesalahan ini pada umumnya membuktikan bahwa mahasiswa angkatan 2010 memiliki kompetensi yang lebih baik dalam menggunakan kolokasi gramatikal dibandingkan dengan mahasiswa angkatan 2012. This research attempts to identify the errors that occur in grammatical collocations made by the English Department students of FIB UGM. It covers four types of grammatical collocations related to preposition, i.e. Noun + Preposition, Adjective + Preposition, Verb + Preposition, and Preposition + Noun. The subjects of the research were twenty students each from the 2012 and 2010 classes of the English Department of FIB UGM. The data used in this research were collected by using tests on the four types of grammatical collocations. The results of the research show that the 2012 students produce 410 errors (53.52 %) and the 2010 students produce 356 errors (46.47 %). Specifically, the students generally have problems with the Adjective + Preposition Type (30.28 %). Followed by the Noun + Preposition Type (26.89 %),the Preposition + Noun Type (26.63 %), and the Verb + Preposition Type (16.18 %). These errors apparently prove that the 2010 students have better competence in doing grammatical collocations compared to the 2012 students. However, their competence does not show highly significant error differences.
