Adrian Veidt’s Striving for Superiority as His Motive for Fake Alien Invasion as seen in Alan Moore’s Watchmen

Skripsi ini membahas tentang pengembangan karakter Adrian Veidt alias Ozymandias di dalam komik Watchmen. Buku komik bercerita tentang pahlawan super, tetapi ceritanya lebih menitikberatkan kepada aspek-aspek humanistik pahlawan super, seperti kehidupan mereka setelah pensiun/berhenti sebagai pahlawan super. Studi ini membahas sosok Adrian Veidt sebagai tokoh utama termasuk motifnya dalam membuat invasi semu makhluk luar angkasa untuk memperoleh perdamaian dunia. Peneliti menggunakan pendekatan psikologis, yaitu teori Individual Psychology oleh Alfred Adler. Teori ini dipakai untuk menyingkap motif Adrian Veidt dalam menjalankan rencananya. Lebih jauh lagi, teori ini juga memperlihatkan karakter dari Adrian, termasuk perubahan perspektif yang dia alami, yang membangun motifnya tersebut. Hasil studi ini menunjukkan bahwa motif Adrian dalam menjalankan rencana jahatnya ialah perjuangan untuk superioritas. Dalam perkembangan ceritanya, superioritasnya hancur oleh rasa ketidakberdayaannya terhadap akhir dunia. Dia merasa satu-satunya cara untuk menutupi inferioritasnya ialah dengan cara mewujudkan perdamaian dunia. Dia bahkan menggunakan solusi yang tidak masuk akal, seperti menciptakan musuh bersama yang semu untuk mewujudkan perdamaian antara Blok Timur (Uni Soviet) dan Barat (Amerika Serikat). Saat menjalankan rencana jahatnya, dia selalu memastikan segalanya berjalan lancar. Bahkan, dia tidak segan-segan untuk membunuh pihak yang tidak bersalah, selama pembunuhan itu diperlukan dalam kelancaran rencananya. Pemikirannya yang brilian namun licik dapat dilihat melalui caranya mencapai perdamaian yang ditunjukkan sepanjang plot cerita.

This graduating paper discusses the development of the character Adrian Veidt a.k.a Ozymandias in the series of comic book Watchmen. The series is mainly about superhero, but it is emphasized to humanistic aspects of a superhero, such as their life after retired being superhero. The study discusses Adrian Veidt as the main character including his motive in making fake alien invasion in order to achieve peace. The researcher uses the psychological approach, which is Individual Psychology by Alfred Adler. This theory is utilized to unveil the motive of Adrian Veidt in carrying out his plan. Furthermore, the theory also explores Adrian’s character, including his perspective changing, which builds the motive. The result of the study signifies that Adrian’s motive in doing his evil plan is striving for superiority. As the story goes, his superiority is corrupted by his helpless feeling towards the end of the world. He feels that the only way to compensate his inferiority feeling is by achieving world peace. He even uses unreasonable solution such as creating fake alien invasion as public enemy to achieve peace between the East (Soviet Union) and the West (United States). During executing his evil plan, he always makes sure that everything runs well. Moreover, he does not mind to kill innocent people who are in his way, as long as it is necessary for the plan. His brilliant yet cunning mind can be seen through the way he achieved peace which is describes in the plot of the story.
