Sarcastic Expressions in The Movie \\"The Guard\\"

Penelitian ini membahas tentang klasifikasi dan fungsi ekspresi sarkastik yang ditemukan di dalam film “The Guard”. Klasifikasi yang digunakan adalah propositional, lexical, like-prefixed, dan illocutionary sarcasm. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah menganalisa klasifikasi dan mencari fungsi dari ekspresi sarkastik yang ada di dalam film. Metode yang digunakan adalah kuantitatif dan kualitatif. Data yang digunakan adalah tujuh belas exspresi sarkastik yang diambil dari film tersebut. Enam di antaranya merupakan propositional sarcasm, sedangkan sebelas yang lain merupakan illocutionary sarcasm. Dari analisa yang dilakukan, terdapat tiga fungsi ekspresi sarkastik: fungsi kompetitif, convivial (ramah tamah) dan kolaboratif. Hasil yang didapat menunjukkan bahwa sarkasme bukan sekedar inversi dari makna, namun juga melibatkan konteks, niat dari pembicara, dan respon dari pendengar.

This research discussed the classifications and functions of sarcastic expressions found in the movie “The Guard”. The classifications were propositional, lexical, like-prefixed, and illocutionary sarcasms. The goal of this research was to analyze the classifications and to find out the functions of sarcastic expression in the movie. The research methods used in this research were quantitative and qualitative methods. The data were seventeen sarcastic expressions taken from the movie subtitles. Six of them were propositional sarcasms and eleven of them were illocutionary sarcasms. From the analysis, there were three functions of sarcasm found: competitive, convivial, and collaborative. The result showed that a sarcastic expression was not just a simple meaning inversion, but also involved adequate context, intention from the speaker and response from the hearer.
