Penelitian tentang sifat-sifat akustik empat jenis kayu Indonesia telah dilakukan. Penelitian ini ditujukan untuk mengetahui sifat-sifat akustik empat jenis kayu Indonesia (sonokeling, waru, tusam dan agathis), meliputi modulus elastisitas Young dinamis spesifik dan faktor redaman struktural melalui pengujian getaran. Sonokeling dan waru diselidiki sebagai pelat belakang gitar sedangkan tusam dan agathis diselidiki sebagai bahan pelat depan gitar. Hasil yang diperoleh kemudian dibandingkan dengan kayu-kayu yang telah diakui sangat baik digunakan untuk pelat gitar, yakni dengan Brazilian rosewood dan Indian rosewood sebagai pelat belakang gitar, serta dengan German spruce dan Western red cedar sebagai pelat depan gitar. Dari hasil perhitungan diperoleh bahwa meskipun kualitasnya masih di bawah Indian rosewood, jenis kayu sonokeling Indonesia cukup baik sebagai bahan pelat belakang gitar, karena mempunyai sifat-sifat akustik yang cukup dekat dengan Indian rosewood. Sonokeling mempunyai selisih nilai terbesar pada faktor redaman struktural arah longitudinal, 11,7% lebih besar dari Indian rosewood. Jenis kayu waru sebagai pelat belakang gitar serta tusam dan agathis sebagai bahan pelat depan gitar ternyata mempunyai sifat-sifat akustik yang kurang baik.

A research of the acoustic properties of Indonesian wood species was done. The aim of the research is to identify the acoustic properties, those are the specific dynamic Young's modulus and the structural damping factor of four Indonesian wood species (sonokeling, waru, tusam, and agathis) by using a vibration method. Sonokeling and waru were investigated for guitar back plate materials, whereas tusam and agathis were investigated for guitar top plate materials. The acoustic properties of sonokeling and waru were compared to Brazilian rosewood and Indian rosewood which have suitable acoustic properties for the back plate of guitars, whereas tusam and agathis were compared to German spruce and Western red cedar which have been found to be the good suited materials for the top plate guitars. It was found that sonokeling has reasonably good for guitar back plate material, because it has the acoustic properties closed to those of Indian rosewood. The structural damping factor of sonokeling has the highest difference to that of Indian rosewood in the longitudinal direction, that is 11,7% greater than Indian rosewood. Waru, tusam, and agathis were found to have bad acoustic properties for guitar materials.
