Sejak tahun 1980-an sawit membawa banyak perubahan pada masyarakat di kecamatan Meliau, Kalimantan Barat. Perubahan tersebut bukan sekedar pada komoditas karet ke sawit, melainkan adanya perubahan dalam sektor ekonomi masyarakat. Keadaan ekonomi meningkat ketika masyarakat setempat mulai ikut serta membudidayakan sawit, seperti yang terjadi pada masyarakat dusun Dekan Putih. Hal ini terjadi karena harga sawit yang tinggi, sehingga meningkatkan jumlah pendapatan masyarakat. Pada awalnya masyarakat sendiri mengakui bahwa kehadiran sawit ini membawa kesejahteraan bagi para petani plasma. Dengan lahan sawit ini mereka mendapatkan keuntungan dari segi keuangan, dibandingkan dengan penghasilan karet. Namun besarnya penghasilan tersebut, ternyata tidak seimbang dengan besarnya pengeluaran. Berdasarkan penelitian yang saya lakukan, hal ini terjadi karena pola hidup masyarakat yang juga telah berubah. Sekarang ini mereka mempunyai pola budaya konsumerisme yang tinggi, sejak mereka merasa telah dapat hidup sejahtera. Padahal disisi lain, masyarakat wajib melunasi kredit pada perusahaan PTPN XIII atas pembukaan lahan sawit KKPA bagi para petani plasma.

Since the 1980s, oil palm has brought a lot of changes to the community in the sub-district of Meliau, West Kalimantan. These changes are not merely that of commodity, from rubber to oil palm, but a change in the economic sectors of community. The economic situation improved when the local community participated in cultivation of oil palm, as had happened in the village of Dekan Putih. This was due to the high prices of oil palm, which led to an increase in the income of the community. At first, the community themselves admitted that the presence of oil palm brought prosperity to the plasma farmers. With the oil palm plantations, they gain from a financial standpoint, as compared to the profits gained from rubber. However, the magnitude of this gain evidently was not balanced by the expenditure. Based on the research I have done, this is due to the changing lifestyles of the community. Now, they have a strong culture of consumerism, ever since they have felt the prosperous life. On the other hand, the community is obliged to pay off the loan from the company PTPN XIII for the clearing of land for KKPA oil palm for the plasma farmers.
