TREES AS SETTING AND AS CHARACTERS IN THE NOVEL THE LORD OF THE RINGS: TWO TOWERS

Penelitian mengenai novel fenomenal The Lord of the Rings: Two Towers, karya Tolkien , jumlahnya masih sangat sedikit, terutama mengenai tokoh pepohonannya. Padahal tokoh pepohonan tersebut sangat menarik untuk diteliti sebab mereka tidak hanya menjadi latar, tetapi juga karakter yang menjadi ujung tombak keberhasilan tokoh-tokoh protagonis melawan tokoh-tokoh antagonis di dalam novel tersebut. Metodologi yang digunakan untuk memahami isi novel adalah dengan close reading. Dalam menginterpretasi pepohonan sebagai seting dan karakter orang-orang suku pedalaman, digunakanlah metode kritik respon pembaca. Teori strukturalisme digunakan untuk membuktikan hasil interpretasi.

Even today, there are only few researches on Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings: Two Towers, which is very phenomenal; especially about the trees, whereas these characters are very unique because they are not merely setting but also characters which take part on the protagonists’ success story to reach the victory over the antagonists. The methodology used to understand the novel is close reading. Interpreting the trees as setting and as characters which symbolize tribal or indigenous people is done with reader response criticism. In order to prove the interpretation, the structuralism theory is then used.
