Fashion as Seen in Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray

Skripsi ini menganalisis novel karya Oscar Wilde yang berjudul The Picture of Dorian Gray. Novel ini menampilkan kritik terhadap masyarakat zamanVictoria. Oscar Wilde mengkritik masyarakat kalangan atas yaitu burjuis dan menyampaikan idenya di novel melalui mode. Ia menggambarkan mode dari para karakter di novel dengan sangat terperinci. Hal ini kemudian menunjukan keadaan sebenarnya dari masyarakat zaman Victoria yang di gambarkan di novel. Tujuan skripsi ini adalah menentukan fungsi dari mode Oscar Wilde yang terlihat di novel berjudul The Picture of Dorian Gray dan hubungannya dengan masyarakat. Skripsi ini menggunakan pendekatan ekspresif, karena pendekatan tersebut adalah pendekatan yang paling cocok digunakan untuk menganalisis hubungan antara perhatian mode penulis yang muncul di novel dengan fungsinya. Penelitian melalui perpustakaan digunakan untuk mendukung analisis. Hasil dari analisis menunjukkan bahwa ada tiga fungsi dari mode yang berhubungan dengan masyarakat. Fungsi-fungsi tersebut adalah mode sebagai kesan, mode sebagai identitas, dan mode sebagai refleksi sosial. Fungsi-fungsi ini menunjukan kondisi sebenarnya dari zaman Victoria. Baju-baju, aksesoris-aksesoris, dan perabotan-perabotan rumah yang digunakan oleh karakter menunjukan betapa besarnya perbedaan antara masyarakat kalangan atas dengan masyarakat kalangan bawah. Masyarakat kalangan atas menghabiskan uang mereka secara berlebihan dengan menggunakan baju-baju yang mahal, sementara masyarakat kalangan bawah hidup dalam kemiskinan. Analisis ini juga menunjukan upaya kaum minoritas untuk mempertahankan posisi mereka ditengah masyarakat Victoria kalangan atas. Dalam novelnya yang berjudul The Picture of Dorian Gray, Oscar Wilde menunjukan bahwa mode adalah cerminan dari masyarkat.

This graduating paper analyzes Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray. This novel presents critics toward Victorian society. Oscar Wilde criticizes the high class people as bourgeois people and states his idea by using fashion in the novel. He describes the fashion of the characters in the novel with so much detail. Later on, it shows the reality of the Victorian society pictured in the novel. The objective of this research is to determine the function of Oscar Wilde’s fashion as seen in the book entitled The Picture of Dorian Gray and its relation with the society. This graduating paper applies expressive approach, since it is the most suitable approach to be used to analyze the connection between author’s concerns of fashion with its functions which appear in the novel. Library research is used to support the analysis. The result of the analysis shows that there are three functions of fashion which can be connected to the society in the novel. Those functions are fashion as image, fashion as identity, and fashion as social reflection. These functions reveal the real condition of society in Victorian era. The clothes, accessories, and furniture which are used by the characters show the great difference between high class and low class society. The high class society spends their money exaggeratedly by wearing expensive clothes, moreover the low class society lives in poverty. It also reveals the struggle of minority to maintain their position in the middle of Victorian high society. Here in his novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray, Oscar Wilde shows that fashion is the reflection of the society.
