MEASURING PREOPERATIVE ANXIETY SCORES USING ANXIETY SPECIFIC TO SURGERY QUESTIONNAIRE (ASSQ) AND REDUCING IT BYALPRAZOLAM 0.5MG AND DIAZEPAM 5MG

Background.The preoperative anxiety is still high among patients undergoing surgery nearly 60%, and causes discomfort and can causes failure in the surgical procedure, so there is a need to reduce preoperative anxiety. According to some studies alprazolam is better than diazepam in reducing anxiety scores among patients undergoing surgery, and decreases the rate of anxiety 80%, and it has a minimum side effects than diazepam. That is why it is necessary to conduct the current research; it is to prove that alprazolam is better in coping with preoperative anxiety. Objective.Themain purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of two drugs on preoperative anxiety. Moreover, the current study tried to investigate the effects of some demographic variables (gender, marital status, age, and educational level) on preoperative anxiety. Method. The current study used single-blind randomized control trial by pretest posttest experimental design.The whole sample consisted of 72 patients in Dr. Sardjito General Hospital. Results.Based on the results the patients who enrolled in the current study had moderate anxiety in pre and post-test administration in term of anxiety level, which means they were still in the same level. However, the analysis showed that in term of anxiety scores and based on effect sizes, anxiety decreased in the both groups. In diazepam group the anxiety reduced by 3.76 points. While, in alprazolam group; the anxiety reduced by 6.4 points. The effect size of diazepam was 0.53 that considered medium, while the effect size of alprazolam was 0.93 and considered high.Furthermore, gender and marital status have significant effects on anxiety scores. Females have more anxiety than males. Conclusion.This study suggested that alprazolam is recommendedto use as an antianxiety preoperative drug, so that patients will feel more comfortable undergoing surgery. Moreover, it is recommended to conduct further researches using other kinds of anti-anxiety drugs, using placebo treatment, and making comparisons among these drugs; actual drugs and placebo drugs.
