REGAINING AN IDENTITY AS A NATIVE AMERICAN IN LINDA HOGAN’S POWER

Tesis ini membahas tentang identitas penduduk asli Amerika karena masalah identitas ini adalah masalah terpenting yang dihadapi oleh penduduk asli Amerika saat ini. Banyak kejadian yang menyakitkan yang menjadi dasar mengapa identitas menjadi masalah utama. Karena masalah ini sangat penting, banyak cara dilakukan untuk menunjukkan dan menyelesaikan masalah tersebut. Power yang ditulis oleh Linda Hogan adalah salah satu caranya. Di novel ini, karakter utama yang bernama Omishto berjuang untuk mendapatkan kembali identitas sebagai seorang penduduk asli Amerika. Adalah suatu tantangan untuk mencari alasan dan masalah utama yang menyebabkan para penduduk asli ini memperoleh kesulitan untuk mendapatkan kembali indentitas tersebut. Penelitian ini bersifat kepustakaan dan menggunakan pendekatan interdisipliner yang telah menjadi prinsip dasar Pengkajian Amerika. Data utama dari penelitian ini adalah Power oleh Linda Hogan. Sedangkan data sekundernya antara lain sejarah hukum di Amerika yang terdiri atas colonial era (s/d 1830), perpindahan dan reservasi (1830-1887), pembagian dan asimilasi (1887-1934), pengorganisasian kembali (1934-1953), penghabisan dan melokalisasi kembali (1953-1968), dan penentuan (1968-saat ini); identitas dan pendekatan sosiologi. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa panggilan jiwa adalah alasan utama karakter utama mendapatkan kembali identitasnya sebagai seorang penduduk asli Amerika. Melalui proses mengenal, mempercayai, dan meyakini; karakter tersebut berhasil mencapai tujuannya. Mengenal yang berisi tentang kejelekan pembangunan, perbandingan antar kulit putih dengan kulit merah, kepercayaan; memepercayai; dan meyakini yang berisi tentang sekolah, pengadilan dan rumah; adalah suatu pengalaman yang membuat Omishto yakin untuk memnjadi penduduk asli Amerika lagi. Alasan ini juga menguak masalah utama yang dihadapi penduduk asli Amerika saat ini untuk kembali ke kehidupan sebelumnya. Hasilnya adalah hambatan (tanah, pengetahuan, dan kepercayaan), dan keragu-raguan (system penentuan status dan teknologi).

This thesis is about Native Americans issue, identity, since it is the main issue faced by Native Americans nowadays. The many painful events are the main reasons why identity becomes the most important issue for Native Americans. As the problem is so important many ways are used to show and solve the problem. One of the means performing the problem is a novel entitled Power by Linda Hogan. In the novel, the main character, Omishto, struggles to re-gain her identity as a Native American. It is a challenge to see the reason and the problems to re-embrace the old ways. Therefore, this study tries to figure out the reason and the problems to re-embrace the old ways. The research undergoes library research. Besides, it employs interdisciplinary approach as the basic principle of American Studies. The main data of the study is novel entitled Power by Linda Hogan. While, some other sources, for example, United States Legal History which consist of colonial era (to 1830), removal and reservation (1830-1887), allotment and assimilation (1887-1934), reorganization (1934-1953), termination and relocation (1953-1968), and self determination (1968-present); the identity, and the sociological approach; are taken as the secondary data that support the analysis. The interesting fact found in the analysis on why the main character, Omishto, re-gain the identity as a native American is that it is the calling the primary reason why the main character re-embrace the old ways. Through process such as recognizing, believing, and committing; the main character finally achieves the goal to re-live as a Native American. Recognizing which is about the ugliness of the progression, the White versus the Red, and the belief; believing; and committing which is about the school, the trials, and the homes; are the process experienced by Omishto which later causes her place her heart in the old ways. It is also the calling that reveals the problem faced by Native Americans to re-embrace the old ways. The finding of this part is divided into two which are the obstacles (the land the knowledge, and the belief), and the hesitation (the blood quantum and the technology).
