Rural Area in Wates District and Panjatan District are vulnerable toward flood. However, rural areas hardly any research has been carried out about social vulnerability and coping strategy in the rural context exist. For this reason, this research intends to identify and analyze farmer‘s knowledge about flood, To analyze the level of social vulnerability according to the local farmer, and To analyze the coping strategy employed by the local farmer. Primary data was collected through interviews to 80 farmer households and group discussion as well as Participatory GIS. The study area was in Panjatan District (Bugel Village and Pleret Village) and Wates District (Kulwaru Village and Ngestiharjo Village). The study shows that farmer knowledge about flood is higher in Panjatan than in Wates because their familiarity toward flood and their strong experience in flood damage toward crop is bigger in Panjatan than in Wates. Both Panjatan and Wates has the same level, medium level of socio vulnerability with higher percentage in Panjatan than in Wates. This is because they have alternate choice for source of income that give biggest contribution toward social vulnerability. Also there were less different between coping strategies in Panjatan and Wates .The main reason is both area are the rural area in the same coastal alluvial plain.
