Faulkner’s The Sound and the Fury as an American Modern Novel: A Study on Ambition in Modes of Subjectivity

Dalam tesis ini, sehubungan dengan teori yang digunakan yaitu teori strukturalisme dinamik, sebuah karya sastra dipandang sebagai bagian dari masyarakat. Masalah pokok pada novel The Sound and the Fury ini menggambarkan masyarakat American South. Pada novel ini, isu yang terlihat menonjol adalah tentang ambisi. Ambisi tersebut tampak pada masing-masing karakter utama pada novel ini dan secara unik disajikan melalui sudut pandang mereka masing-masing. Oleh sebab itu, terdapat perspektif yang berbeda-beda pada masing-masing karakter utama yang menceritakan konflik sentral pada keluarga mereka, The Compson, keluarga aristokrat American South. Dalam Pengkajian Amerika, karya sastra digunakan sebagai sebuah jendela untuk melihat kebudayaan Amerika, pada kasus ini, kebudayaan American South. Masing-masing anak dari keluarga Compson mempunyai ambisi sendiri-sendiri dalam hidup mereka, ambisi yang manusiawi sehubungan dengan kondisi American South pada masa itu; masa setelah terjadi perubahan dari American South yang lama menuju yang baru dan modern. Novel ini mempotret kebudayaan American South yang mengalami penurunan dalam beberapa aspek. Sehubungan dengan karya sastra American South, karya sastra karangan Faulkner bercerita tentang manusia modern yang memaksakan hasil instan diluar waktu dan tradisi. Hal itu merusak semua cara formal pada ketertekanan manusia. Pendapat Faulkner pada analisisnya tentang keburukan moral pada masa lalu utamanya merupakan sebuah serangan terhadap penyimpangan-penyimpangan moral yang terjadi pada awal sejarah masyarakat kulit putih di American South. The Sound and the Fury karya Faulkner ini adalah novel psikologi modern yang paling penting yang menggunakan teknik narasi yang memberikan bentuk pada struktur individual dari stream of consciousness. Melalui gaya bahasa dari narasi orang pertama dari kakak beradik keluarga Compson, tema novel terbagi menjadi beberapa bagian dan aspek. Bahkan bagian terakhir dari novel tidak menampilkan semua tema tersebut dalam bentuk yang terorganisir menjadi satu kesatuan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mencari elemen dari mode subjektivitas yang terdapat didalam novel melalui empat perspektif yang berbeda-beda yang disajikan oleh pengarang. Bagaimana mereka direfleksikan dalam novel, dan bagaimana hal itu membentuk pokok permasalahan pada novel tersebut. Kedua, penelitian ini akan membahas analisis tentang tema utama pada novel dengan korelasinya dengan kebudayaan dan masyarakat American South pada masa itu. Penulis tesis akan menghubungkan hal itu sebagai indeks tentang kebudayaan untuk menjelaskan tema utama dalam novel. Hal ini bertujuan untuk mengobservasi elemen-elemen struktural pada novel sekaligus hubungan dan fungsinya dalam disiplin ilmu Pengkajian Amerika. Kemudian akan tampak tema dari The Sound and the Fury sebagaimana yang diperlihatkan oleh strukturnya; yaitu yang merupakan hubungan dari tindakan diantara kejadian dan interpretasi. Hubungan ini bukan berarti suatu hal yang baku, melainkan pergantian perspektif karena setiap manusia memiliki versi kebenaran masing-masing dalam dirinya. Hal ini tidak berarti bahwa kebenaran tidak ada, terbagi-bagi, atau tidak diketahui, namun kebenaran adalah persoalan respon dari hati dan pikiran logis.

In this paper, in line with the dynamic theory that is used, a work of literature is seen as part of the society. The literary problem in The Sound and the Fury describes the Southern society. In the novel, there is a conspicuous issue that is about ambition. That ambition is seen from each of the main characters and is uniquely presented through the eyes of their viewpoint. Therefore, there are different perspectives of each main character that tells the central conflict in their family, The Compson, as a Southern aristocratic family. In American Studies, literature is used as a window in observing the American culture, in this case the South. Each Compson‟s children have their own ambition in their life; a human ambition connected with the condition of the situation in the change period from the Old South to the New South. Therefore, the novel is portraying the South culture which declining in some aspects. In relation to Southern literature, Faulkner‟s works explain the untraditional man who forces a practical result outside time and tradition and thus violates all formal means of human repression. Faulkner‟s comment in his analysis of the past of the moral evil in man is essentially an attack upon moral errors that occurred at the beginning of White Southern history. Faulkner‟s The Sound and the Fury is the most important modern psychological novel in using the narratives techniques to give form to individual structures of stream of consciousness. Through the style of the first-person narratives of the Compson brothers, that theme is splits into a variety of sections and aspects, and even the final part of the novel does not bring these together in a clearly organized whole form. This research is to examine the element of modes of subjectivity in this novel through the eyes of four different perspectives presented by the author. How they are reflected in the novel, and how it forms the subject matter in the novel. Second, it will provide the analysis of the main theme of the novel, in correlation with socio culture of Southern at that time. The writer will relate that as a cultural index in explaining the main theme in the book. It tends to observe the structural elements in the novel as well as its connection and function in the field of American Studies. It would appear then, that the theme of The Sound and the Fury as revealed by the structure, is the relation between the act and man‟s apprehension of the act, between the event and the interpretation. This relation is by no means a rigid or inelastic thing but is a matter of shifting perspective, for in a sense, each man creates his own truth. This does not mean that truth does not exist, that it is fragmentary, or that it is unknowable, it only insists that truth is a matter of the heart‟s response as well as the mind logic.
