The Pursuit of American Dream in the Main Character of Dreiser’s Sister Carrie

American dream adalah sebuah konsep yang meyakini bahwa kesuksesan berawal dari suatu kerja keras. Istilah ini biasanya mengacu pada kesuksesan finansial, kecukupan materi dan ketenaran. Sejarah dari American dream sendiri dapat ditelusuri melalui sejarah dari Negara Amerika Serikat, sejak dari jaman Puritan sampai revolusi Amerika yang kedua. Orang-orang dari seluruh dunia datang ke Amerika Serikat dengan satu mimpi yang sama, yaitu American dream. American dream juga menginspirasi banyak penulis novel dalam membuat karya mereka, seperti misalnya Theodore Dreiser dengan karyanya yang berjudul Sister Carrie. Novel Sister Carrie diciptakan sekitar tahun 1900, ketika saat itu banyak orang bekerja sebagai buruh di banyak pabrik di Chicago dan kota-kota besar lainnya di Amerika Serikat lainnya. Mereka rela bekerja keras untuk bertahan hidup di kota besar. Tesis ini mengulas tentang American dream yang diangkat dari novel Sister Carrie karya Theodore Dreiser. Dibawah perspektif Pengkajian Amerika, penelitian ini menerapkan pendekatan interdisipliner. Teori-teori yang digunakan dalam thesis ini adalah teori Pengkajian Amerika Tremaine McDowell dan teori sastra M.H. Abrams. Penelitian ini fokus pada analisa American dream yang tokoh utamanya, Carrie, yang dicapai dalam fase fase hidupnya. Penelitian ini membuktikan bahwa Carrie melakukan banyak perjuangan dan pengorbanan untuk menggapai mimpinya, American dream.

American dream is a concept that values success from hard working. This term usually implies financial success, material comfort and dream of fame. The history of American dream can be traced back from the history of the United States of America, from the puritan era to the second American Revolution. People around the world come to America with one common dream, the American dream. American dream also inspired many authors to write novels, such as Theodore Dreiser with his work Sister Carrie. It was created around 1900s when there were many people worked as labors in factories in Chicago and other big cities in the United States of America. They were willing to work hard in order to survive in the big cities. This thesis discusses the American dream depicted the novel Sister Carrie by Theodore Dreiser. Under the perspective of American studies, this research conducts the interdisciplinary theories. The theories being used are from the American studies theory from Tremaine McDowell and the literary theory from M.H. Abrams. This research focuses on the analysis of the American dream that the main character, Carrie, achieves in her phases of life. This research shows that Carrie does so many efforts and sacrifices in order to achieve the American dream.
