RECONCEPTUALIZING IDENTITY THROUGH ROMANCE: A POSTFEMINIST STUDY ON (500) DAYS OF SUMMER AND LETTERS TO JULIET

Studi ini meneliti bagaimana konsep identitas dalam pandangan posfeminisme tergambar melalui genre roman. (500) Days of Summer and Letters to Juliet adalah dua film yang digunakan sebagai bahan acuan dalam analisis. Penelitian ini melihat karakteristik dari identitas posfeminisme melalui dua film tersebut. Penelitian jenis kualitatif ini dilakukan dalam dua analisis. Pertama, penelitian dilakukan dengan menjelaskan formula genre roman dalam film (500) Days of Summer and Letters to Juliet. Melalui analisis ini, unsur-unsur baru dalam film juga akan terlihat, yang menunjukkan bahwa kedua film tersebut merupan film romantis di era posmodern. Kedua, analisis ini menggunakan teori reflective budaya popular, yang menyebutkan bahwa karya seni terdiri dari simbol-simbol dan mitos yang merupakan sarana untuk menyatakan perasaan, nilai dan ide yang kompleks. Penelitian ini menganalisis simbol, nilai atau ide dalam dua film tersebut yang menggambarkan konsep identitas dalam pandangan posfeminisme. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa kedua film tersebut menggambarkan roman posmodern terlihat dari beberapa perubahan dalam formulanya. Hubungan cinta yang berkembang dalam roman posmodern berbeda dengan tipe roman secara umum. Cinta dalam era posmodern dilihat sebagai suatu investasi hidup, orang memilih pasangan berdasarkan beberapa hal, seperti kesamaan minat, stabilitas keuangan, kesehatan. Akibatnya, cinta dipandang secara realistis. Perbedaan pandangan mengenai cinta tersebut tergambar dalam (500) Days of Summer and Letters to Juliet. Dalam menjelaskan konsep identitas dalam pandangan posfeminisme, studi ini membahas beberapa isu yang mendukung analisis, yaitu kemandirian, individualisme, kefemininian, seksualitas, dan pernikahan. Posfeminisme mendorong wanita lebih mandiri secara ekonomi maupun emosi, mampu mengendalikan hidupnya, mampu membuat pilihan-pilihan bagi kebahagiaannya, termasuk pilihan untuk lebih terlihat dan bersikap feminin, pilihan untuk hidup single atau menikah dan menjadi ibu rumah tangga. Analisis film (500) Days of Summer and Letters to Juliet menunjukkan bahwa tokoh wanita dalam film tersebut, melalui penggambaran hidup, penampilan, cara pandang, hubungannya dengan kekasihnya, merefleksikan konsep identitas dalam pandangan posfeminisme yang mengakui keragaman identitas bagi setiap wanita.

This study deals with how postfeminist concept of identity is described in romance. Two romance films, (500) Days of Summer and Letters to Juliet are used as the point of reference of the research. Thus, this study aims at describing the characteristics of postfeminist identity through the two romance films. This qualitative research is conducted in two analyses. Firstly, it describes the formula of romance genre in (500) Days of Summer and Letters to Juliet. Through the description of the formula, it also reveals the new elements or the inventions of the films which represent the type of postmodern romance. Secondly, the analysis applies reflective theory of popular culture which states that a work of art consists of symbols and myth which become a means to express the complex of feelings, values, and ideas. This study employs the reflective theory to analyse how the symbols, values and ideas in the films reflect postfeminist identity. The result of the study shows that the two films characterise postmodern romance through some changes of the formulas. The love relationship developed in postmodern romance is different from the classical type of romance. Love in postmodern age is considered as an investment of life; people today select the mate based on some terms, such as the compatibility of interest, financial security, health. Consequently, people undertake romance more reasonably. The different outlook of romantic love is reflected in the (500) Days of Summer and Letters to Juliet. In defining the concept of Postfeminist identity, the study conveys some issues that supports the analysis, namely: women’s independence, individualism, femininity, sexuality, and marriage. Postfeminist empowers woman to be more independent in finance and emotion, to able to take control of her own life, to make choices for her happiness, including the choice to be feminine and the choice to either be single or get married and become a housewife. Through the analysis of (500) Days of Summer and Letters to Juliet, the analysis shows that the heoines- through her life background, her look and outlook, her relationship with the heroes- represent postfeminist identity that acknowledge multiple identity for every woman.
